Trump to sign order making English the official U.S. language

In my experiences, Mexicans living in the southwest are unlikely to learn to speak English well. In the plains states more likely. Probably in much the same way my Italian family followed the immigrant language progression. First generation, my grandparents, spoke only Italian, specifically the Sicilian dialect. My parents were bilingual and my sister and I only English.
… American …

My father-in-law immigrated as a child. His father demanded the family only speak English. Consequently, his Dutch is about the level of a 12 year old in The Netherlands and his children do not speak the language at all.

The other extreme is my best friend. His mother immigrated from (fled) Cuba as a child. His father is Puerto Rican. His family speaks fluent Spanish.

They function WAY better than English only speakers.

Gotta love it.

Encouraging the development of English language skills is a good thing.
No, its not. Encouraging effective oral and written communication is a good thing. What language that communication happens in, is not particularly important. Passing laws rewarding some language use over other language other language use is historically pretty damn ineffective. The nouns and verbs do not seem to care as they travel about and flow between larnyxs and tongues. The people do what comes natural to them, what seems to get their message across and they pick a word because that word works at that moment with the audience they hope to communicate. If that word wins over another word in the marketplace of communication, it becomes more common and another less common. Dictionaries notice the patterns, media absorb these patterns and nobody gives a shit about whether the in the derivative past the word was Spanish, Gaelic, Sioux or English.

I am a fan of people learning languages. The more the merrier. I don't pick a favorite and I don't especially want my government to .

Congratulations, gentlemans and ... lady! !! You've got an official language right now!

How could you live without it ?
But why ENGLISH ? It's strange. He could pick Russian, why not ?
Or .... Ukrainian !
Imagine : From now on Ukrainian MOVA is official language of the United States of America! Sounds great!

Lol Zelensky is meeting Trump right now. Making Ukranian the official language of the US is the most powerful security guarantee the US can give Ukraine. Zelensky should not leave the White House until Trump signs Executive Order making Ukranian the Official Language.

Wait, does this mean the US government will no longer have translaters? At borders, for example? That wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Cut costs! Fire the translators! Create jobs for translators who will set up shop outside immigration posts and offices. Each immigrant pays for his own translators

🤣🤣🤣🤣

A fistfull of dollars makes a world of a difference. For a fistfull of dollars, Mr Tourist, you need not even speak. Money will do your talking

🤣🤣🤣

If your fist is big enough the dollars will get you a Green Card and a fast track to citizenship.
If you're simultaneously rich enough and stupid enough to pay that much.

It is part of the Shock Doctrine that Naiomi Klein described in her book. It isn’t new but it is new to Americans. The tactic is what our government has successfully used to destroy foreign nations, essentially in South America.

Overwhelm the people of a nation with rapid relentless announcements of policy change until most everyone becomes numb to change while you rob the country blind.

Klein, a Canadian, warned that it could one day happen in the US …and here we are.

“People who do not believe in the same god or obey the same king are more than willing to use the same money. Osama Bin Laden, for all his hatred of American culture, American religion and American politics, was very fond of American dollars.“

How does this encourage it? Do you get an award if you learn English? Maybe a bronze card instead of a gold one?
Actually, I'm of the opinion that the Hispanic community would be better served if more of them learned to speak/read/write English. They are at a disadvantage, both personally and collectively because they lack English literacy skills.

MAGA, be careful what you wish for. The Hispanic community will rise up as they learn the 'official language' and then what are you going to do.?

Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

For those who are curious or interested I recommend the book. I realize using the "b" word will alienate many people who visit DP but frequently thoughts, the basis of understanding, come from books. In my opinion, Klein's book is most relevant now.

"The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism is a 2007 book by Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein. In the book, Klein argues that neoliberaleconomic policies promoted by Milton Friedman and the Chicago School of Economics have risen to global prominence because of a deliberate strategy she calls "disaster capitalism". In this strategy, political actors exploit the chaos of natural disasters, wars, and other crises to push through unpopular policies such as deregulation and privatization. This economic "shock therapy" favors corporate interests while disadvantaging and disenfranchising citizens when they are too distracted and overwhelmed to respond or resist effectively. The book challenges the narrative that free market capitalist policies have been welcomed by the inhabitants of regions where they have been implemented, and it argues that several man-made events, including the Iraq War, were intentionally undertaken with the goal of pushing through these unpopular policies in their wake."

Of course it is. I used to teach ESL both in the US and in Mexico, and the demand was great. But Americans developing some Spanish language skills is also a good thing.

One wonders if we will have to change the names of some states and other locales: Dakotas, Colorado, the Carolinas, Florida. But “I left my heart in St. Francis” doesn’t cut it.

True, Hispanics would be better served by learning English. But in addition, speaking the Spanish I learned on the border has served me well professionally in every job I have had. Funny line from the Sopranos, when the gang was teasing an Italian who knew no English; “Be a good American,” they said, “speak Spanish.”

I am speaking within the context of the United States, and within that context I am entirely correct. Anyone who cannot speak English in the US is will have great difficulty earning anything more than a subsistence living.

A single language for our country is clearly something that should be done.
However English should not be the language. A country the size and diversity of our country should have it's own language. I think a language incorporating words from all the different nationalities would be more appropriate and it should be called American not English.

Does broken English count? Some people are real sticklers about this kind of thing. People need to be clear if they have all the best words.
🙂
Would one were to receive a dollar for every time a double-negative were heard it would lead to becoming a millionaire.

According to available information, around 180 countries worldwide have a designated official language, meaning they have a national language recognized by their government. Only the far progressive left would see this as an problem.
"an problem"

LOL!

There's some irony in imagining Donald signing an EO making English the official language, whose full text he himself is unable to read and understand.
