This is not an optics issue. He wasn't wrong to badmouth someone or give a bad (for him) interview.

He was wrong to fire the FBI director over an active investigation of which his associates (and perhaps Trump himself) are the subject.

He was stupid to admit in an interview that was his motive, not wrong.

But even Sen. Grassley and Sen. Feinstein put that point to bed after the last hearing that Trump is not under investigation.

Also there has never been an FBI Director since Hoover has played in the political affairs as Comey did. He was way out of the lines. So much so people were afraid of him just like they were of J. Edgar Hoover.

Per Trump and his White House, they canned Comey to derail an active investigation (one that involved Trump's associates, campaign, and probably ultimately himself). That's alarming and that's going to be a big problem for Trump.
