Trump's letter, assuming it can be authenticated (which shouldn't be difficult, given its grade-school language) is evidence that the 25th Amendment needs to be invoked. It constantly astounds me that someone of such inferior qualities resides at 1900 Pennsylvania Avenue, and that he has the support of such a large swath of American voters (thankfully, never close to a majority). I have had some experience, professionally, with legitimately mentally-challenged individuals who adhere to some pretty whacko conspiracy-based departures from reality. Occasionally, such fantasy-based worldviews result in violence. Having one at the top of the political food chain is something I did not think could happen.
It was not until I began posting here at DP that I realized how pernicious and pervasive such defects can be. I'll be honest, it scares me and I have come to appreciate the historical basis for mass hysterical events such as the rise of fascism and the internment of Japanese Americans, the red scare, etc. I see now how it is possible for large segments of the population to just turn off their brains and moral radars and participate in such atrocities. From a psychological standpoint, it is fascinating; from a social standpoint, it is terrifying. To see it in writing in such blunt terms is just mind-boggling. And to have any rational, thinking, ostensibly moral humans fail to appreciate just exactly what it is, demoralizing.
It raises the age-old question: What has our country come to?
