(AP) — Former President Donald Trump again said Wednesday that if he returns to the White House, he would not defend NATO members that don’t meet defense spending targets, days after he set off alarms in Europe by suggesting he would tell Russia to attack NATO allies he considered delinquent.

Speaking at a campaign rally in South Carolina, he retold the story of his alleged conversation with the head of a NATO member country that had not met its obligations. This time, though, he left out the line that drew the most outrage — encouraging Russia “to do whatever the hell they want.”

“Look, if they’re not going to pay, we’re not going to protect. OK?” he said Wednesday.

Russia isn't a threat to NATO.

But, even if they were, those NATO countries will have a choice when Trump is President: Either pay up or shit their pants when they get attacked.
 
I wonder if Russia would even have him if he didn't have money or power.

100% dishonest post. Russia is clearly NATO's current largest threat. Saying it isn't makes your's a 100% dishonest post. Trump is a complete weasel. 100% untrustworthy. Any country or person who thinks Trump can be trusted to "have their back" is just ignoring all the bodies under the Trump bus. But you go ahead and send him money. He's probably feeling a little short these days.

Common, can you blame him?

In 2016, Russians interfered on his behalf and helped get him elected. In 2020, they clearly did not do enough. So he has to be clear he is worth Putin's investment.

Trump's crude and instinctive disgorgements have only on real purpose, to feed raw meat to the basest portion of this followers. His swinging between simple minded bluster and threats, to oily superlatives and backslaps is 90 percent of his personae, the only tools of communication he has.

And one part of his personae is also to pick up half facts, some meme he heard years ago, and ignorantly keep repeating it.

Increased NATO spending is being resolved by events, not Trump. A least 18 countries are, or will in 2024, meet their 2% targets - a huge increase in the last few years. This appears to include every frontline state, including those who appear to be Putin's shills (Hungry and Slovakia). And it also includes Germany, France, and Turkey.

Flea brained threats by Trump to let Putin attack laggards like Luxenberg, Spain, or Belgium arn't going to move the European backstop states to do anything.

The NATO contribution issue was solved by Trump's bro, Putin and Trump is trying to disinter an issue that is no longer much of an issue.

The US can and does base forces wherever the hell it likes as long as the country says it's ok to have a base.
The UK for instance can't stop for from pulling all your forces out and even if we tried I'm unsure how we'd do that.
Short of surrounding US bases with police and arresting every US person in them which would be tough as they would have broken no law.

Trumps knowledge of how NATO works is pathetic and doesn't take into account that the alliance has been in existence for decades.
Why would any country take the US seriously if you're going to suddenly decide to backstab an alliance like NATO?

Well, just because the US has been screwed for decades, that's no justification to keep getting screwed.

btw, the UK doesn't dare try to close US bases. They will lose a BIG chunk of their economy.
