Trump: 'I will be a great unifier'

Democrats/liberal/lefties have been defending that very argument for some time around here...seems they have something in common with the Don.

as for my opinion on that.. he's dead wrong... he can go stand in the corner with the rest of the people who defend murderous tyrants.

He's not defending murderous tyrants he's slamming civilian populations who won't rise up against them like France, Romania, East Germans and Egyptians have before them. It's not our job to do it for them. If they can't at least take the first step they don't deserve freedom.

In the words of bill Clinton "freedom isn't free"

first, that phrase came from Col. walter hitchcock.. not Bill Clinton... (good gawd:roll:)
2nd, I disagree in defending a murderous tyrant.. even if you are just trying to "slam" the oppressed people under his power.... the last thing an oppressed people need is to be crapped on by those whom live free.
3rd, i feel it's the obligation and moral duty that everyone who prizes freedom should, indeed, oppose tyrants.... even violently.
4th, everyone deserves freedom.....unless they have forfeited that right through criminal activity or human rights violations..( then they deserve imprisonment or death, depending on the severity of the crime)

1) Crap I thought that was Clinton.
2) blah blah
3) blah blah
4) no they don't. They have to earn it. Some people are ok with a level of oppression take the Chinese for example.

I disagree that the world was better with him, but I do think that the war was a mistake given that we had not achieved victory in Afghanistan and against al Qaeda before going into it.

I just can't believe that the Republicans will still rise up for this guy after basically repudiating the whole Bush foreign policy.

you're entitled to that opinion... we can agree to disagree

it's politics.. positions sway to and fro all the time.... I remember when Democrats weren't socialist, were the ones starting wars, and weren't out to eat the rich... but look where we are today. <shrug>

I think it's pretty naive to think that a position on the Iraq war is supposed to be some sort of litmus test forever...

i'll only address #4.... freedom is a basic human right... every human is born with that right....
I don't know of anyone that is ok with chinese people being oppressed.... don't confuse not doing something about it and support... they aren't the same

and really.. what did you do to earn your freedom?... be precise.

1) most Chinese people are apparently ok with partial freedom. It's ingrained culturally. May change over time but as of now they don't seem to want to rock the boat. As with all cultures the wealthy are protecting theselves.
2) I was born to freedom. I got lucky but have no obligation to fight for others freedom far far away. As I said unless they give the good fight why should I join them?

you were born with freedom?...how is that possible??.. you said people have to "earn their freedom"

it's a good thing the people that fought for your freedom didn't believe as you do.

that's better :)

in my experience , i've encountered more hispanics that are seriously opposed to illegal immigration than white people...that's why i find it odd that he's labeled a racist when he speaks forcefully about illegal immigration.

but like i said, the racism charges are all played out... they don't have the impact they did even 10 years ago...that's what happens when that card is trotted out every day... it loses it's "pop"

Hispanics aren't white? That's a new one.

"Born to freedom" for those with poor reading comprehension skills (to be fair I should have bolded it for you).

More specifically societies need to earn their freedom. We can't do it for them.

As Obama said freedom isn't free. Give an Iraqi a freedom handout vs rewarding him for fighting for it. See the difference?

As I recall we gave a bunch of Iraqis freedom. The majority ****es responded by slaughtering Sunnis. The favorite torture practice was to drill holes in their Sunni neighbors bodies (skulls, knees etc). Sunnis responded by siding up with ISIS.

I say let them figure it out. We don't need to do it for them.

I'm sorry, but this is the funniest ****ing thing I have heard in a while. Obviously he's a unifier. I love the way he has united the republicans,.

Not really. It is pretty simple. All he has to do is piss everyone off and we are unified.

I read and understood it just fine.... it simply doesn't reconcile with your " you have to earn freedom" argument.

there was a society back in the late 1700 that fought and won our freedoms... we didn't earn it... we didn't have to earn it..... someone else did it for us.( we just have to keep it)

it's a good point that it's preferable that folks rise up to fight for their freedom, though... but i'll also have to point out that the majority rarely does.... even in our case, "society" didn't jump up and win freedom... "society" primary sits on it's ass and does nothing.
if we had waited for "society" to jump up and earn freedom, we'd still be singing God Save the Queen.
(thankfully , the French helped us out greatly... I doubt we could have done it without them.)

so really , don't sit here holding on to your own personal "freedom handout" while saying nobody else is entitled to be free unless they earn it...

Trump has a plurality of votes among voters in the Republican primary. i don't know many conservatives that actually like him. 27% is hardly a "majority"

Trump and Carson together comprise a healthy majority. Carson is even worse than Trump in some areas.

You're just nitpicking. Freedom earned is the same as freedom won. It's the continuous fight to keep our civil liberties, either during peace or wartime.

Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed — else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die.
Dwight D. Eisenhower

No, I dont understand. If Carson is 'a close second,' how does that show "an ugly streak of racism and ignorance runs through the modern conservative base." Carson, who happens to be black by the way, has more conservative support than does Trump.

Carson would represent the ignorance.

And if you really paid attention, which you don't, you would know that there is nothing conservative about Trump or his positions.

You don't know what I know. Stick to what you know.

He is a hodge-podge populist, who is more left than right. So if he is a racist, hes your racist.

Trump is Trump. He's an opportunist. He has gained support by studying the ugly underbelly of racism and bigotry within the base for political advantage.

It's not that he is simply opposed to illegal immigration. He says Mexico is sending the worst, the rapists, and drug dealers. He calls black people lazy, stereotypes Jews, and wants to shut down all mosques. He may not be using blatant racial slurs, but his statements reveal him to be a racist.

(thankfully , the French helped us out greatly... I doubt we could have done it without them.)

Also, don't forget the Dutch. A 1782 loan, garnered by Adams for Congress of five million guilders, from three Amsterdam banking houses, helped greatly.

yes, i remember the comments.

He calls black people lazy, stereotypes Jews, and wants to shut down all mosques.
do you have substantiation for any of this?.... the media would be on fire if any of this was true.

He may not be using blatant racial slurs, but his statements reveal him to be a racist.
well, as i've explained.. this charge has no impact anymore... it's meaningless.

Up until he started this actual campaign I thought he'd be a halfway decent politician. But all he does is repeat the same thing: "I will be great. I will end world hunger. I will bring world peace. I will amplify the output energy of the sun. . ."

Goddamn.

aye.. that too.

they should have said " nope.. go earn your freedom yourself... we ain't givin' no freedom handouts!!"

I think there's a few things he can do well...for example,I do think he would be able to swing deals with the opposition to get things done.... but his campaign rhetoric is just over the top... and he doesn't have the skills to unite the nation.

about the only thing that will bring us together is a nation tragedy( but that's temporary)... there isn't' a political leader in sight that has the ability to unite a divided people like we are....we're in for at least 4 more years of substantially increased division.

aye.. that too.

they should have said " nope.. go earn your freedom yourself... we ain't givin' no freedom handouts!!"

It wasn't a handout. It was a loan.
