IMO, there has't been a real torch singer since the 1960's or so. I'll bet many of you don't even know what I mean.

This is an example:

After seeing the video I prayed my thanks to every god of earth I am familiar with that there are no more 'torch singers' whatever they are.

May have to iggy you, MKULTRABOY. This is audible sex, and if you dislike THAT, we have nothing at all in common.

I know what you mean, Pinkie. I was born in '64 but we grew up with the oldies (song and tv) that Mom liked

WTH did this genre die out? I cannot think of anyone now who I'd call a real torch singer.

It's as if sexy women lost their appeal.....incomprehensible to me.

This thread is officially the awfully-good music thread.

Amazing? Terrible? But you can't stop listening.

This genre is alive and well.

Hang on...I'll listen in a moment. I hope you are right. But Connery, you must admit these ladies have not got the style the film noir era torch singers had.
THAT was a HUGE part of the "charm", donca think?

I disagree that this is a torch song. She has a fabulous voice, but I'd call it Blues.

IMO, torch singers ONLY sing about sexual desire in a female.

Sexual desire in a female...

Most of you have probably seen Jessica Rabbit. THIS is a torch singer scene...albeit animated. Offhand, I don't know who voiced her.

I don't know if she's a torch singer, but I'm carrying a torch for Nora Jones....

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a torch singer?

I think it would be a good idea to define torch song then.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, torch song: a popular sentimental song of unrequited love.

This is a great example.

"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" (also known in short as just "And I Am Telling You") is a torch song from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, with lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger. In the context of the musical, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" is sung by the character Effie White, a singer with the girl group The Dreams, to her manager, Curtis Taylor Jr., whose romantic and professional relationship with Effie is quickly ending. The lyrics to "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", often considered the show's signature tune, describe Effie's love for Curtis, both strongly devoted and defiant. She refuses to let Curtis leave her behind, and boldly proclaims to him, "I'm staying and you ... you're gonna love me."
