200 soldiers mobilized to help fight wildfires in Western US

BOISE, Idaho — Officials with the National Interagency Fire Center say about 200 active duty U.S. Army soldiers are being mobilized to help fight wildfires across the Western United States.

It’s the first active-duty mobilization for wildfire support since 2018. More than 5,900 square miles (15280 square kilometers) have burned so far this year, and 105 large wildfires are burning across the Western United States.

The soldiers will be trained over the next week at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington, and are expected to begin firefighting on hand crews in early September.

The National Multi-Agency Coordinating Group asked the Department of Defense to provide the soldiers. Four military C-130 air tankers equipped with firefighting gear are also being used to fight fires in California.

It’s not uncommon for national fire managers to request help from the military. Active duty military members have been deployed as wildland firefighters 38 times in the past 33 years, according to NIFC.

September 12, 2020

Ninety-seven large fires have burned 4.7 million acres acres the western states. More than 29,000 firefighters and support personnel are assigned to wildfires. Evacuation orders are in place for 40 large fires in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah.

NIMO (Houseman) has been assigned to COVID-19 support at Forest Service headquarters in Washington, D.C. NIMO (Reinarz) has been assigned to provide wildland fire support to California.

Two hundred thirty-three soldiers from the 14th Brigade Engineer Battalion based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington are deployed in support of the August Complex.

One RC-26 aircraft with Distributed Real-Time Infrared (DRTI) capability and support personnel from the 141st Air Refueling Wing (Washington Air National Guard) has been deployed to Fairchild AFB (Spokane, WA), in support of wildland fire operations.

Two MAFFS C-130 airtanker and support personnel each from the 153rd Airlift Wing (Wyoming Air National Guard) and the 146th Airlift Wing (California Air National Guard) have been deployed to support wildland fire operations in California.

Three wildland fire suppression crews and three overhead personnel from Quebec, Canada are supporting fire suppression efforts in the Northern California Area.

During this unprecedented time, the safety of the public and all wildland fire responders is always the number one priority for all wildland fire agencies. For more information and links to the Geographic Area Plans, visit the NIFC COVID-19 page.

Actually, this fire season has been remarkably small in Alaska. There are currently only 30 fires being tracked. YTD there have been 335 fires in Alaska, and they have burned just over 181,251 acres (283.2 square miles; 733.5 km[SUP]2[/SUP]). It is certainly nothing "historic" much less a disaster.

There is a good reason why propagandists in the media don't want anyone looking at Alaska's wildfires. They make the fires in the lower-48 look like a tiny camp fire.

In 2004 Alaska had 701 fires that burned 6,590,140 acres (10,297 square miles; 26,669 km[SUP]2[/SUP]). The single biggest fire of those 701 was the Taylor Complex Fire. That particular fire consumed over 1,700,000 acres (2,700 square miles; 6,900 km[SUP]2[/SUP]).

In 2015 Alaska had fires that burned 5,098,829.9 acres (7,967 square miles, 20,634 km[SUP]2[/SUP]). Which just barely surpassed the record established in 1957, the third biggest fire season in Alaska, when fires burned 5,049,661 acres (7,890 square miles; 20,435 km[SUP]2[/SUP]).

If the propagandists in the media weren't so eager to push their leftist agenda they would put things into their proper perspective by including Alaska when referring to "Western Wildfires." But then they wouldn't be able to intentionally deceive the masses.

I have been on fires in Alaska. The Alaska Fire Service does a remarkable job.

That said what you are failing to mention is the remoteness of Alaska and its population density. The management strategy used on many of the fire in AK is not the same as the lower 48. Resources for the majority of fires in AK have to be supported entirely by air. That is crews are aired in, supplies are aired in, and of course the use of air attack. Main priority for some of the fires is to protect the remote villages. Not so much on keeping fires to the smallest acreage. When it comes to wildland fires AK is nothing like the lower 48 from management, logistics and public impact.

I am find in appalling that some want to make wildfires a left or right issue. I am retired from the BLM Fire after 30 years service. Firefighters don't care about the politics. We care about public and firefighter safety, promoting Firewise standards, and proper resource management.

We sent 159 firefighters to Australia to fight their fires, including 8 from Alaska. Also, 5,900 square miles (3,775,997 acres) of wildfires annually is fairly normal, and not anywhere close to a record.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center the established records for annual national wildfires are:

2015 = 10.13 million acres burned;
2017 = 10.03 million acres burned;
2006 = 9.87 million acres burned;
2007 = 9.33 million acres burned; and
2012 = 9.33 million acres burned.

The 3.78 million acres burned thus far in 2020 is pretty small by comparison to prior years. So much for the hyperbole and propaganda being spewed by the leftists in the media.

Enjoyed every year. It allowed me to see parts of the US I never would have seen. It was fun moving up the organization.

Thank you. The firefighters on the west coast have their hands full. I pray they will be safe.

That is true. They have to fight fires very differently, depending on geographical location and the environment. Population density definitely determines the level of response. If a fire started by a lightning strike is in a remote area, and poses no risk to private property, then there is no point in wasting resources on it. Alaska is the only State that I'm aware of that uses dogs with their firefighters. Which is considerably different to how you would go about fighting a fire in the Angeles National Forest of southern California. Geography, the kind of environment, and population density are all contributing factors.

As someone who lives in a forest, I am particularly appreciative of firefighters. I'm so paranoid that I won't even use my burn barrel unless it is actually raining or snowing outside. You will also notice that it is the leftist media making a huge deal about Trump ignoring the fires in the western States. They will gladly lie about any disaster, risk any life, if they think they can score a few political points against their opponent. It is what leftist filth always do. Remember Rahm Emanuel's admission that Democrats "never let a crisis go to waste."

And that forest fires are a natural and healthy process for forests that have not been mismanaged. Some fir cones dont even open to reproduce unless there is fire. The issues down here are mostly because of the danger to people and structures. Or because fire has been suppressed for so long it creates firestorms.

And thanks for your work with the BLM. I was a park ranger for 13 yrs, 10 of them out west.

This is the barely coherent and grammatically inept speech of a man who desperately wants to be able to claim that he "cured coronavirus."

That's it, in a nutshell. When we do get a handle on this crisis, he wants to be able to pull out footage and declare "I called it! I said use this! I said try this! I told them to do this, it was my idea!" He's just doing it with lots of stupid stuff because he doesnt want to miss an opportunity. He's afraid 'the big one' will be mentioned and he wont get credit for it.

It's all about declaring himself the savior of the cv crisis and we'll hear all about it, esp in his campaign. (Which is basically each of his press briefings these days) --- Lursa

I agree with you. There are fire dependent and fire independent ecosystems. You are correct that many of our forests do not have a "natural" fuel load. When some fires occur they may have longer flame length and due to fuel load burn longer and hotter damaging the soil.

Thanks for your duration as a park ranger. Bet it was fun,

The National Park Service uses what they call "prescribed fires." Unfortunately there are numerous examples of these so-called "controlled" burns getting completely out of hand and destroying private property.

Wildfires, Prescribed Fires, and Fuels - Wildland Fire Program (U.S. National Park Service)

The military also uses "prescribed burns." They just recently completed burning 30,000 acres in order to "preserve" 68,000 acres.

The leftist filth in the media have already politicized the fires, just as they have politicized COVID-19, the climate and everything else. If you don't like the fact that I'm pointing that out, I don't really care. Wake up and smell the coffee, I'm not the problem here.
