Of course U.S. schools dominate. British schools have done well. Singapore has two schools in there.

The top three spots on the QS World University Rankings changed this year, with MIT taking the top spot for 2012. MIT overtook the University of Cambridge, which took second place ahead of Harvard, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.British schools took four of the top six spots, but American colleges and universities occupy 13 of the top 20 spots in the annual ranking.

Even though it's down at #68, it's nice to see UT on the list.

I do wonder sometime how the undergraduates compare.
The people I have know from some of those schools with advanced degrees MS, PhD,
were exceptional. Some of the undergrads were great, but some just good.
I think much of the Curriculum at the undergraduate level is set by statute, so the material
presented is much the same across the board.
The big name schools have big name faculty, but many of those do not teach at the lower level.

The same school that graduated an illiterate because he was a quarter back?

And yet still not as bad as encouraging the collusion and secrecy involved in covering up the rape of young boys for the sake of the football team's reputation.

Has nothing to do with the topic. My point is, how can a university be considered a top school when it is so easy, even an illiterate can get a degree?

I think one (un-cited, I might add) example of corruption is an ill prepared argument against the school's ability to educate and provide a challenging learning environment. Have you ever attended classes or audited courses at UT?

I thought everyone knew Vince Young is functionally illiterate and graduated from Texas.

Anything less than a 10 on a wonderlic is considered illiterate, Vince Young scored a 6.

So Wikipedia and a fleeting reference from another un-sourced article.

I found this:

“I didn’t think that academic-wise I was smart enough, that I could keep up with other students,” Young says. “But when I set my mind to it, with the strong supporting cast I had with my family members, it pushed me to be the man that I am today.”
....
The experience taught him a lesson, he says, and at UT the standout football player says he made the academic honor roll.

From an article stating he returned to UT to work on an Education degree: Vince Young, Returning To Finish His Degree, Challenges Texans To Go To College (Watch) | The Alcalde

And this article, which specifics that the score was likely incorrect/inaccurate: Rumors Swirling About Vince Young's Intelligence: Austinist

And several articles on the flaws in the Wonderlic test that make it harder to gauge its true value:

And lastly: If Vince Young has one of the hundreds of sensory/communications disorders, any test that isn't specifically designed to compensate for those disorders would likely make him look "illiterate". Given his own description of his educational background, I'd say the likelihood of him having such a disorder would be fairly high.

Either way, the claim that UT graduated a "functionally illiterate" QB is weakly supported by the evidence provided.

I think that "top" lists that are categorized by individual academic programs are more useful. "Top" students are more likely the middlin students to know what field they want to study, and just because an overall university is ranked tops, doesn't mean that specific departments are also tops.

While most certainly MIT may be the top engineering school (and a lot of other majors also), it may not be the best school for other majors. Other majors may receive better educations at colleges that don't even make the top 100 overall list.

The college that my son goes to is only ranked something like 130th in the US, yet it has the #1 International Business Department (as ranked by US News and World Report), one of the top biology programs, and the #1 Honors College (the Honors College is setup to provide the best teachers to the best students and the typical student is Ivy League or near Ivy League quality, but for whatever reason didn't get into an Ivy League school or didn't get enough in scholarship money to attend and Ivy League school).

Someone wanting to study International Business may very well get a better education at my son's average state college than any of those top 100 in the world colleges.

Awesome! How I wish I could go and study in one of these top schools! :)

If your goal is money, to be in a frat or to be famous... please go to a "top" university.

If your goal is to be happy and content then you can go anywhere you want.
