There’s no actual debt ceiling right now.

The fiscal deal passed by Congress on Wednesday evening to re-open the government and get around the $16.4 trillion limit on borrowing doesn’t actually increase the debt limit. It just temporarily suspends enforcement of it.

That means Americans have no idea how much debt their government is going to rack up between now and Feb. 7, when the limits are supposed to go back into place and will have to be raised.

So, what do YOU want for Christmas?

This is really getting pathetic...

If 1 incumbent is left standing after the 2014 elections we might as well all just throw in the towel...

With the lack of political will, both by elected representatives, and by the general population, this is going to just keep going on and on, until only stark necessity puts a stop to it. I stopped worrying about it a couple of years ago, when I realized that nothing is going to change until we come up against a brick wall. At a certain point, nothing will stop a runaway train.

I call it falling into the abyss, different metaphor, meanings the same.

Sometimes you have to make a leap of faith when you are facing an abyss! Many Americans are just now seeing what a disfunctional government we have, and they are shocked and disgusted. We shall see what happens next!

Good evening, Pero. :2wave:

Still the government can't spend more than what the CR authorizes regardless of what the debt limit is. The government can only spend what money has been appropiated.

I know the government is rapacious, but having $966 billion dollars at their disposal for spending should carry them through for a few months! Let's hope they spend it wisely...or is that out of the realm of possibility?

You're not one of those guys who go to a new car dealership, sign the papers, drive home with a new car, and then decide not to make the payments because you've decided you've spent enough on everything else already?

what happens next

Next is maybe one more year of partying, then the biggest crash the world has ever seen. The media will try to blame it on conservatives and the free market, but remember we warned you. It's unlimited spending and the printing of worthless paper to cover those debts that caused the crash. Don't blame the free market. This one's squarely on liberal spending. When all America looks like Detroit, remember you were warned.

from the article

“Suspending the debt is less transparent to the American people. It allows Members of Congress to avoid debate on the specific dollar amount increase in the debt limit, making their vote politically much easier to cast,” the organization wrote in October. “A calendar date is not nearly as scary to constituents as a figure in the trillions of dollars.”

I suppose I would prefer that the people who make an obscene amount of money for what they do to do it correctly.

Yes, they should keep the government open and raise the debt ceiling as needed.

Good evening, Pero. :2wave:

Shall I say Good Morning instead, Most Americans pay little to no attention to what is going on in Washington until it effects them personally. Especially the day to day operation. This is what most people on a site like this do not understand. Remember we are a nation where only a bit over 50% vote in presidential years and around 30% in the off years. Most of those who vote pay no attention to politics until the elections draw near. Those who do not vote have their reasons, a whole lot of them but basically the biggest reasons are they just don't care or they don't vote because they figure it will do no good as Washington is going to do what they want no matter what. Business as usual will always rule in Washington. Most people probably do not know we are 17 trillion in debt or that we my be very close to falling into that abyss. They just do not pay attention.

Did this get most peoples attention, probably so as to knowing about it. As to knowing the reasons why and all the debates going on, no. They just know that it happened. Will this be a big changer in politics, no. Most Americans will continue to live their lives as this didn't happen in their bliss of watching football or baseball of American Idol or what ever replaced it. They will go to work and come home and most won't know and don't care what is going on in Washington.

I have been worried for quite a while, since what is happening in DC goes against everything I was taught by strict parents and grandparents. You cannot spend more than you have indefinitely, and expect good results in your life. We have too many examples throughout history that prove that, and to imagine America will somehow be different, and escape the consequences, is wishful thinking, IMO. The parable of "The Ant and the Grasshopper" shows us that. A few years ago I asked my co-workers, during a discussion at lunch, what would happen if everything stopped...no one could imagine such a thing! I pray we don't find out, because millions are not mentally ready to handle it. I hope I am..... Sad...

Greetings, Respecthelect. :2wave:

Pero, too many people are doing what they can just to keep a roof over their head and take care of their families to give much thought to what DC is doing. Now there is talk about companies cutting work hours down to 29 per week, because of Obamacare, when the necessities of life are getting more expensive all the time? We know companies are not going to pay 40-hour wages for 29-hours worked! What will people do? Total craziness has taken over!

Greeting, my friend.

Notice how liberals and liberal media flipped truth on its head by blaming those (Ted Cruz) who want nothing more than responsible spending? Meanwhile, the voracious spenders (Obama-Reid) are somehow the good guys, because they want to keep spending more than we earn? "Clean" CR's and "clean" debt ceilings mean "keep spending like crazy," is that "clean?"

The goal is not to keep spending at any cost, rather to spend only what we earn (take in in tax revenue) and those who would spend responsibly are the good guys. Printing worthless paper only ends in a crash and those who would spend printed money are the bad guys.

Cruz didn't want responsible spending. His demands weren't about spending levels. They were about the ACA and other right-wing legislative agendas.

The Democrats agreed to the GOP's spending levels months ago and for some reason you only give the Democrats flak about spending and compromise...

Where do you think the money comes from to run arguably the largest of all entitlement programs? Ted Cruz (and his compatriots) stand for much more than ending Obamacare. They insist the government limit itself to the areas enumerated in the constitution. That includes responsible spending.

Since when is 30 hours considered full time employment? It has always bee 40. Only under Obamacare. But it gets worse, for every two part time employees, they could as one full time employee. So 10 part time employees equals 5 full time employees under Obama care and 5 of those 10 must be give company health care. I am glad I don't have to choose which 5 get it and which 5 do not.

One of the local Atlanta news station had an employer who employees 18 full time workers, 40 hours or more a week and around 400 part time employees. I missed what the company does, but it is something like lawn care, seasonal type work. Right now his 18 full time employees get their health care from him and none go to the part time employees. Under the law now he has to provide health care for 200 of his 400 part time workers along with the 18 he does already. He can't afford it. It is either he goes out of business and everybody loses their job or everyone goes into the exchanges to include the 18 real full time employees. Naturally, he is going to pay the fines if he can, it is still unknown how that will effect his company and its bottom line. He may still go out of business. All because the law makes up 200 full time employees out of 400 part time.

It is not the wages paid, it is just the classification or category Obamacare puts them in. You work 29 hours, you get paid for 29 and your part time. You work 30 hours and you get paid for working 30 hours and your are now full time.

Yes, they should keep the government open and raise the debt ceiling as needed.

I don't deny the necessary evil of government, but I can demand, and everyone should demand good government. What's good government? Not spending like a teenage girl with her daddy's credit card for starters...
