The Israeli claim , the justification is that Iran is on the verge of possessing WMDs ( nukes to be precise) but the evidence for this is nothing like strong enough to justify the attack.

It's the same argument that was given for the illegal 2003 Iraq war.

Plus preemptive attacks are illegal unless there is a credible and imminent threat and that's why the Israelis have been lying on this , AND LYING FOR YEARS ABOUT IT.

Thirdly you are compelled to exhaust ALL peaceable means before the resort to war and seeing as negotiations on a new Iran nuclear deal were ongoing obviously that also effects the legitimacy of such an attack.

And finally and likely most obvious of all, imagine if the law allowed states to just go around claiming their attacks on other states was because they feared a future attack by them?

I would guess even someone such as yourself might just be able to see the relevance of such a situation to the integrity of international law.
