With Elon Musk stepping back from political distractions and recommitting to his role as a wartime CEO, this moment feels like a day of reckoning for Tesla, a chance to deliver on a decade-long promise and ignite a new era of growth.

The Austin pilot, with its $4.20 flat-fee rides, is a significant success: providing safe, reliable rides with minimal teleoperation, which validates Tesla’s technology. Tesla’s FSD relies on AI-driven vision, which can operate anywhere, untethered by pre-mapped zones.

Civilization upgrade-mode activated!

Hey, he actually has a commercial offering at last; 10 years behind Waymo with safety drivers and far too late, but, nonetheless.

If this is the future, it's more like the future was a decade ago than now.

Like the people who said the internet is a fad and will never buy anything online.

Good luck living in the Stone Age.
I don't use taxis now, why would I start now?
Hence my statement that I would never use a Robotaxi.

I saw something about auto driven taxi stuff in another thread and asked about safety for stopping the auto if something bad happens and also the emergency exit measures. Of course, I haven't yet gone to the library to check for the information in a book or an encyclopedia, but . . .

By the way, what's that Inter-something?

And I remember the Stone Age - - - those were such happy times. All complicated now. Somebody told me the other day there was some kind of machine that could fly like a bird, but he'd been sipping on the moonshine, so I reckon he was just making up stories.

How does a $4.20 flat fee ride work? Within town limits? What town?

The drive on youtube makes it seem really annoying. Kept using its signals when other drivers didn't, and it nearly caused a accident. I don't know if it is ready.

The fee amount seems appropriate for Austin. ;)

I assume both the source and destination must be within some predefined limits. A round trip would cost $8.40.

Tesla will have to part ways with edolf before a lot of us will voluntarily do business with the company. If I'm in a situation in which I have to use one of these taxis, I will, but I won't seek them out if there's another way.

Consider me successfully trolled, edolf.

Congrats Tesla on catching up to Waymo circa 2022.

Waymo's fleet size is 1,500. Does Alphabet/Waymo know how to manufacture vehicles on scale?

Tesla can expand robotaxis by 35,000 in 2026.

Waymo/Uber is cooked.

Based on what?

Tesla is cooked on scale-out since they don’t have a platform that works in moderate fog and other common weather conditions.

If the Onion were still funny, they could make a headline about this titled. Anti-ICE protesters rejoice as Elon Musk announces new driverless flammable cars or something like that.

LOL!

Waymo doesn't own its vehicles, and its lidar, hardware, and maintenance costs are not scalable in the long run.

Tesla has a network, Waymo has a dedicated fleet.

Why do you have such strong feelings for something you have zero experience with?

I have been in a Waymo and own a Tesla. You?
Congrats on having been in a Waymo once upon a time and owning a Tesla that may or may not have FSD.

As for myself, I use Waymo roughly weekly for the better part of 18 months, and not only own a Tesla (at times two) but have used FSD virtually every single day for several years now.

You?

lol the videos from the robotaxi would be hilarious if they weren't frightening. This thing is absolute dogshit at driving. Regulators need to step in and keep Tesla's deathtraps off the road until they are ready. Somehow, Tesla made a vehicle with self-driving even worse than its other model vehicles.

It doesn't. This isn't the actual rate they will charge.

Robotaxi is not "launched," it is basically in a closed beta test, and it's shit.
