All in the Family.

I saw a recent thread about Rosanne Barr being kicked off her new show.

People talk about Rosanne's return and failure thanks to...intolerance?

This brought to mind All in the Family.

This was the breakthrough TV series that woke America up and paved the way for shows like Roseanne, Good Times, The Jefferson's, The Cosby Show and so on.

I picked this sample of an episode to show how cutting edge it was.

We'll never see shows like All in the Family again.

That's because in the current climate of "tolerance," we can't see the humor in making caricatures of things we fear, hate, or are offended by. Things we need to see addressed in a way that opens up even the coldest minds to different possibilities.

Instead we try to force people to conform via schoolyard bullying tactics, which change no minds, only pushes things undercover.

I wish we had a society that tolerated shows like All in the Family again. That would be the best example of Free Expression I can think of.

So true...those days of tolerance are over...shows like AITF and TJ would never make the pilot today...

It seems like we have gone backwards... Leftism sucks.

Barney Miller was all about ethnic stereotypes...and funny as hell!

Sanford and Son? I can't imagine that being produced today.

Good Times? Today it would be blasted as being too soft on race and poverty.

The Honeymooners? Total misogyny

Bewitched? Treats witches unfairly

Pretty much every Bugs Bunny episode would be banned because of racism, sexism and promoting gun violence

Charlie Chan? Totally stereotyped Asians

Benny Hill? They'd throw him in jail

That was a brilliantly subversive series. And freaking hilarious. While certainly not on network television, there are other platforms for such irreverent shows nowadays.

Damn! My last post - just a moment ago - in the Roseann thread, was claiming I could watch Archie Bunker all day long! Thank's for this!

Oh man Luther, now you're talking with Barney Miller! An unbelievably great show. Night Court was no slouch either. But Barney Miller was in a class by itself!

So much wrong in this post. Odd that you'd pick Emmy's night where we have the most diverse and amount of TV shows on TV at any point in history to show a clip of All in the Family. A TV show from the 1970s. When we have more options for viewing great talent and great stories more than at any time in history. I watch more content on Amazon and Netflix. HBO and Showtime than I do on the big three network Television channels. Where Movie stars are moving to TV in droves and TV budgets have swelled to $100 Million a series. We have westerns, fantasies, dramas, scifi and cyberpunk, comedies, dramedies, period pieces, more late night talk shows than ever before. Travelogues, limited series, cooking shows, and docudramas. Podcasts, audiobooks, political shows (not on cable news) and vulgar vile comedy that puts Archie Bunker to shame. Not to mention all the different novels that have been turned into TV shows since All in the Family.

We have big budget franchises that do better on TV than most movies do at the Box Office. We have complete universes where multiple TV shows collide and come together like a larger movie. We have spinoffs and prequels and continuations. Fans have saved TV shows from cancellation more times than at any other time in history. Four TV shows were saved from cancellation this year and indeed, even Roseanne will live on in another form. You may not like it, but I ask, what is there not to like? If you don't like something radical about one show. Don't watch it. There are 1000s of other options to choose from. That you think All in the Family is the peak of Television is truly sad. It proves that you have chosen not to look for other things, try other options, maybe cut the cord and go streaming.

Ironic that Archie Bunker is the caricature that I think of the most when I hear people talk on this form. (I was born in 1989) The guy who most conservatives have morphed into 110%! My boss worships this fictional character.

You wish society tolerated shows like All in the Family again? We've had TV shows that features drag queens, pop stars, and soft pornography. A superhero that protects the streets of Harlem (And yes the N-word is said many times) and a small town in Indiana that gets taken over by goo monsters. We have a new version of Star Trek and Star Wars is coming to TV in a few iterations too.

Plus! Lots of the shows from that era are actually being rebooted. There were even talks about All in the Family Itself but it appears to have not gone forward. To those of you who say that there is nothing on TV, it's insulting to those of us who follow the industry or work in it. It means that you haven't looked. Simple as that.

Instead, we are all treated to lame, scripted 'reality shows to entertain us.

What's worse, the same SJW mental infection has taken a strong hold in Hollywood, and are shown in the weak movie receipts.

All In The Family was a revolutionary show that set new standards, much like the Sopranos did at the turn of the millennium.

What made Archie and Mike the perfect duo, was that it showed their worlds weren't nearly as far apart as they perceived them. They were both excellent at showing the others hypocrisy. That often resulted in heated fireworks, but it also forced them to question the foundations of what they believed about the world, which helped make them better people.

You REALLY have no idea what All in the Family was about. The show was ANTI-misogny. It was ANTI-racist. It was ANTI-ethnic bigotry.

Caroll O'Connor was probably a bigger liberal than Rob Reiner and that's saying something!

Waiting for one of you RW-ers to start making comparisons between Roseanne Barr and Carroll O'Connor, who's POLITICS, by the way, you would hate to the marrow of your bones.
And politics aside, Carroll O'Connor wasn't bat **** crazy.

The difference is that while Archie started off as a bigot, he went on an intellectual journey to discover truths about his country, religion, race, and larger world that morphed him into a better human.

By the end of the show he loved a regarded a young black male as part of his family, respected his wife's contributions, disavowed prejudice and hatred, and even had a beer with a gay man. Yeah, he could still be an ignorant prick, but, he had also seen there was no point in judging people by stereotypes, and that everyone deserved to be treated decently.

Brilliant show.

He played a great conservative. All in the Family, Heat of the Night. The General in Kelly's Hero's. Too bad his kid had drug issues.

I never said anything about the content in All in the Family. The majority of my post was highlighting all the different types of TV shows that are out there today, if only one chooses to look. I'm sure it was a fine show and all, but I generally do not watch shows from 40 years ago, unless it's scifi. I also have a very picky sense of comedy. Just my style.

You completely missed the point.

Yes we have "drag shows." Who watches them? People in drag, people who like drag, and some curiosity seekers. Most people don't or won't.

Yes we have "pop star" shows. Who watches them? Pop star fans, and some curiosity seekers. Most people don't or won't.

Yes, we have "soft pornography?" Who watches them? People titillated by porn, kids who are curious to see what's up, and curiosity seekers. Most people don't, or won't.

Yes, we have all those new "diverse, inclusive, etc." versions of Star Wars, Star trek, etc.. Who watches them? People who think that stuff is "keen," and curiosity seekers. But real Sci-Fi fans hate the new stuff for being too preachy, and most other people don't or won't.

All in the Family drew viewers from every segment of America; racist, sexist, Black, White, Leftist, Conservative, ding-bat, and intellectual. It "fooled" people into thinking they could identify with some member of the cast...and it lured them into ways of thinking they would otherwise never encounter hidden behind those caricatures like Archie, the Meathead, etc.

You just see the show in the worldview of your generation...I can't fault you for that. But you really show amazing naivete with your rant.

He played a great conservative. All in the Family, Heat of the Night. The General in Kelly's Hero's. Too bad his kid had drug issues.

He was a great actor and the Archie Bunker role was spot on for the time. Frankly, it's rather sad that the younger generation fails to see the show for what it was and that across the board people are too wrapped up in themselves to take a second and laugh at that face in the mirror from time to time. That's what Archie was all about. He got us to look at ourselves and our prejudices without being preachy or academic. He taught us that it was OK to disagree with someone socially or politically as long as you also respected the person who disagreed with you.

What makes you guys on the Right appear incredibly stupid is that so many of you are convinced that Leftists killed off Roseanne because of her politics, when it was the fact that she was a bat **** crazy asshole that did her in.

Um...Meathead. Meatloaf was the guy with the Bat out of Hell album.

Oh yes. I understand the role of characters and that they have to evolve in TV shows. It probably wouldn't do that well today, although with the right actor/setting it might. But that's not because of PC libruls, it's because that type of thing isn't that shocking anymore. Society has evolved. But that doesn't stop certain people from worshiping a 40 year old TV show and it shouldn't. I'm being pretty gracefully about All in the Family. I know how many people of that generation love it. But don't bash our stuff and claim there's nothing on when there's so much content we don't know what to do with.

It is with no small amount of pride that I get to say that, in the closing credits of AITF, all of those houses were built by my Italian grandfather. In his almost fifty year career in construction, he probably built almost a quarter of the middle class residential housing on Long Island and in Queens.
You can also see his homes in Goodfellas, the Godfather and The Sopranos.

Wow. Now I wonder if he built my house
