Texas inmates being "cooked alive" without AC

Oh yeah, I loved it when Teagan praised the Guatemalan dictator accused of massed murder as getting “a bad rap.” Later the man was convicted of genocide. Who could not love a president so in touch with what America stands for?
Maybe the same Americans that love the presidents that pardoned the Gestapo murderers and imported Nazis to live and work in America or the presidents that support dictators in South America, the Middle East and Asia in the past and even today. That is what America stands for.

I have little sympathy for people who go themselves into bad situations over and over
Trump's the king of bad situations he gets himself into.
Impeachment for his coup attempt
impeachment for his extortion of Ukraine
illegal charity (using charity money for his own stuff)
bankruptcy how many times?
Convicted felon awaiting sentencing
Indicted felon in two more expansive cases, including the fake elector scheme (coup above)
Mishandling of classified documents

I mean, it's a long list, we don't have the character limit to write all the "bad situations" this man has gotten himself into.

You don't just have sympathy for the guy, you want him to be President of the United States (and to avoid those remaining trials)

So why do you defend him and promote him every day? Because you aren't being serious.
The only question I wonder about is whether you volunteer or are paid to push this nonsense. You can't possibly believe the things you type.

It is true that internationally, the US often mirrored the imperialist crimes of the Soviet Union. That is one face of my country, but not its only face. Many people are still inspired by “the better angels of our nature.”

24 pages of babble over the suffering prisoners who get three meals a day, regular exercise, time outside with their intimate friends, and minimal risk of being shot and killed defending their country.
Since they were too stupid to be successful criminals, they should consider themselves to be lucky they're alive being fed and housed at no expense to themselves.

A few months ago I read a post by someone here bitching that his barracks had no AC. I could not believe it but he was damned serious.

You appear to be very ignorant on the subject.

The amount the U.S. military spends annually on air conditioning in Iraq and Afghanistan: $20.2 billion, according to a former Pentagon official. - June 25, 2011 NPR

So, they should consider themselves lucky they haven't been dumped on a desert island to die?
This is why so many people come out of prison with mental problems and a total inability to get a job so are almost forced back into crime.

How does that help wider society?

Nothing but hateful reich-wing bullshit.

Are you suggesting that if we put fewer people into prisons we would have fewer people with mental problems?
What a great idea. Don't put people in prison so that they don't go crazy and they are more employable. People will be more balanced and the economy will grow.

I was in the Philippines for 18 months in a barracks with no AC. You learn to deal with the heat and humidity.

While I do think the US imprisons more people than needed (this is shown by the US having the highest prison population by far) my suggestion was to treat those in prison with respect and not like animals.
Scandiniavia does that and the rate of recidivism is tiny compared to the US so it does work.
The main problem is many Americans seem completely unable to look at examples from the rest of the world and just shut down debate because they claim the USA way is the best way without even any debate.

AC did not exist when the Earth was created and still does not exist for poor folks.
Prisons are a great way to sharpen one's skills on committing fraud, internet scamming, robbing, drug dealing and murder. Since most inmates enter with no or little job skills, they are anxious to learn how to make much better money when they are released. Lock your doors.

Reagan restored military aid to countries who had that aid cut off by Carter due to massive human rights violations.
Carter borrowed his wife's clothes

You're comparing America's social structure to Scandinavia? Is that all of Scandinavia or some of it? Those countries are homogeneous in their social makeup or do you simply believe you can make a one-to-one comparison of our multi-cultural melting pot to a rather unvaried social milieu?

You tell me how anyone can make a comparison between our country of 330 millions to any one country of under ten million?

What world do you live in? I was held in crowded conditions for five days in jail before trial. Charges dropped. So are thousands of others.

Again, are any of the inmates being held prior to trial, meaning they are still innocent in the eyes of the law?
In Texas, most people awaiting a hearing or a trial are held in the county jails, which I think are air conditioned.
The article is about state jail, which is some subset of the state prison system.
Many Texas prisons don't have air conditioning. This lawsuit seeks to change that
County jails in Texas must be kept between 65 and 85 degrees, but state prisons don’t have to be air conditioned.
I wonder if the older prisons do a better job, because they were designed before AC existed, and likely took advantage
of passive cooling?

Funny, they seems to protect freedom OF religion as one of the first orders of business.

You are one of those people who thinks freedom OF religion is freedom FROM religion.

It's not and it never was.

The separation of CHURCH and State is not the separation of God and State, and it never was.

You can ignore that which you don't believe and live in your own reality if you like, but here in the real world all law is based on wrongs done others, and our sense of right and wrong is our morality.
How do you expect to have freedom *of* religion without also having freedom *from* religion as well?

What does that have to do with how you treat prisoners?

Prisoners don't need AC in their cells.
Give them water and electric fans.
That's better than what existed in prisons one hundred years ago.
They're being punished for their crimes.
They don't need to be coddled like migrants being put in expensive hotels that are air-conditioned.
23 web pages of needless prattle because prisoners have to deal with the heat just like everyone else. Fall is coming soon. Everything will get cooler.

The way many prisons in the US seem to be in competition to treat prisoners as harshly as possible (because the role of prison govournor is elected) shows the disdain people like you have for those in prison.
You somehow think giving them AC in 100 degree heat is coddling them.

Yes, the US should look how other countries deal with those in prison, you may learn something and the rate of recidivism may come down or you could just continue to treat people like utter shit and the cycle of re-incarceration in for profit prisons will continue forever.
It's your choice.

You wrote: "the rate of recidivism may come down or you could just continue to treat people like utter shit and the cycle of re-incarceration in for profit prisons will continue forever."

There is no evidence the rate of recidivism will ever come down. And to suggest putting in air conditioning for prisoners will bring that rate down is utter fantasy.
And if recidivist prisoners continue "to treat people (their victims) like utter shit", re-incarceration will be the future of these failed criminals.
Find some other stupid criminals to pity.

1. Texas is hotter than it was a century ago.
2. Show with supporting documentation that their prisoners have enough access to clean drinking water.
