Looks like the city and county governments need to pick up the slack.

they already are....

what the OP fails to mention is that Perry is not opposed to FEMA...
and oddly enough Obama turned down his request for aid for the wildfires in May when 2.2 million acres were charred... Texas is about out of resources to fight the fires.
had aid flowed freer in May, Texas would be able to deal with the fires now a bit better.

every fire department around is churnin' and burnin' trying to take care of these fires ( 53 total, 3.5 million acres).. and these firefighters and volunteers are plumb tired.
overall, the state, counties, and cities are doing everything they can....it's nothing like Katrina where the state and city officials dropped the ball and did little or nothing.. Perry and other leaders are handling business pretty well.
( i've got some choice words for the Austin City council though... but now is not the time)

What your not considering is that Perry like other republicans have been hammering at Obama to cut spending, even to the point of cutting things that shouldn't be cut like Social security and medicare.. But there is no mention about all the money being spent on disasters?? How much of the debt is for Katrina?? Or all the flooding we had this spring, or the oil spill that conservatives made sure BP didn't have to pay for or very little?? What about hurricane Irene?? And all the ones to follow??

The problem?? Knowing republicans like Perry, what would Obama have to cut to be able to afford disaster releaf in Texas?? You all don't want to pay for nothing.. You refuse to raise taxes, and you want to cut everything else.. So?? How exactly does Obama have money to spend on disasters?? Are you willing to raise taxes so we can help people with disasters?? What if the Seattle area was hit with an Earthquake like Japan?? Are we going to have the disaster relief for that?? What if the earthquake hit L.A. instead?? Everything from Santa Barbara to San Diego completely wiped out??

Cutting spending doesn't provide for anything else.. Like helping Texas.. You all can blame your own party for that.. Obama is just living by your rules..

Bush cut taxes and then increased spending.. It is no wonder the economy sucks.. to fix it, we need to do the opposite of Bush.. Increase taxes and cut spending.. Not just cut spending..

So...in a state where people have lost homes (some of them twice this year) and lives, where animals have died because they couldn't be evacuated, where farm lands and ranch lands have been destroyed....you want to turn this whole situation into a political rant against responsible government spending? Have some sensitivity and get off your high horse for a second. The people in this state saw cuts to every single program and spending outlay in the budget; it wasn't as though we targeted fire protection services just for the hell of it. It wasn't the 500+ families in Bastrop that made the spending decisions, but in order for you to make some stupid little point about spending you're willing to say "screw 'em" and "it's all the GOP's fault".

That doesn't help people in need of help. I wouldn't be telling California, a state that receives a large amount of disaster aid almost yearly, to "deal with it" because their budget is so atrocious they can't possibly afford to cover the costs of disaster. I wouldn't be telling them to blame their state government for the fact that there's no help coming. That's just crass.
