Tennessee takes lead in Republican effort to restrict drag shows

It's not a sexual fetish.
You dont understand it. It really shows how ignorant you are
I understand that you're trying to deny reality to excuse perversions. Gross.

It is important to correct understand what is happening here. There are already laws regarding sexual performances and minors. It is already very much illegal to strip or engage in suggestive performances in front of minors regardless of if it is a drag show or not. What is happening is the GOP wants to define being trans (or even gender non-conforming) as inherently sexual, and unacceptable for minors to view.

The only part of this law that is different is putting "male or female impersonators" in the same category as strippers basically. LGBTQ groups have been warning that if passed (and the law just passed and is waiting to be signed) it could be used to charge trans comedians as an "male/female impersonator" engaging in a performance, would effectively ban trans or gender non-conforming people from pride parades, and would probably end up technically making a good portion of Shakespeare plays afoul of the law.

Just last weekend I went to a Renaissance Faire. At the faire there was a show where at one point a man put on a dress and a wig and played "the princess" and the other man tried to impress "her". Literally a "female impersonator". There were kids present because it was literally a kids show aimed to mostly entertain kids. In Tennessee that show would now be illegal.
Republicans working to drag TN back into the dark ages; one drag at a time.

No they didn't.

Maybe so. What I see is defining where the line is not to be crossed.
They did, if you have ever performed a drag show in an adult venue and then perform any sort of public drag performance, it’s now criminalized.

Targeting children with drag shows isn't cool. Not that it's any of my business I don't even have kids.
It's very disturbing that parents would bring their kids around these types of shows. I don't think there needs to be a law banning such things. It's just unfortunate that their are a lot of horrible parents out there.

Hopefully they can make it a crime for men to grow their hair as long as women

My kids shouldn’t have to see that
Unless you are in a metal band it's pretty weird for a guy to have long hair. I'll admit, I had long hair in college but it looked to pretty. Girls were jealous of me.

There are already laws against engaging in sexually explicit public performances in front of children.

This law would criminalize drag queen story hour or even drag performances at Renfest.

These guys are actors in a movie that was probably rated R. This is much different than those men who actually do it as a lifestyle.

Maybe they should just arrest the parents who take their kids to these creepy events?

You think parents that take their kids to a public library where a drag queen is reading a kids book should be arrested?

I don't think there should be laws against such things. I do not think the parents should be arrested. I do think parents who would take their kids to such events are creeps.

So you are saying that if someone was at a library with their kids, and there was a Drag Queen Story Hour event where someone in tasteful drag was reading The Giving Tree, if those parents let their kids listen to the reading, they are creeps?

Nah..I just like making fun of extremists like you because you say really dumb things
You like bragging about supporting adults acting out sexual fetishes on children? Get help.

Explain what is meant by "a lifestyle" please.
Describe a typical day in the life of a drag queen that you have direct experience with, as in "you know how they go about their day" and explain how it is a lifestyle.
The fact is, you've just proven that you've never seen "To Wong Foo" because it is not rated R, (PG-13) because there's no nudity or sex acts in it whatsoever.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how you read it that way.

Parents have a say in how they raise their children. You don't get to tell others they must accept indecency in the regular public settings. Keep it up and people may think you are a groomer.

I personally think long hair on guys is disturbing, but that's my opinion, and I respect that others can do so if they like.

I don't think that's true.

It was rated PG-13. If I remember, there was no sexual content in it. But I have only seen it once, when it came out. It was a pretty good movie.

Read the thread, I have already listed the text of the bill. It's clear as day.

From the text of the law:

"This amendment defines "adult cabaret entertainment" as adult-oriented performances that are harmful to minors, as such term is defined under present law; feature go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, male or female impersonators, or similar entertainers; and include a single performance or multiple performances by an entertainer. An "entertainer" means a person who provides:"

Tennessee General Assembly Legislation

If you read the law further, they point out in the law that present law already bans obscene conduct and performances in public. What they are doing is saying, that isn't enough, we also want to ensure that anyone in the most broad definition of drag possible, is not criminalized if they perform in public in any manner.

Hell the later text of the law even stipulates that you are an "entertainer", if you have ever done a drag show in an adult oriented establishment (gay bar), thus if someone has ever performed in a gay bar, no matter what the performance, if they perform in drag in anyway in public, it is now a criminal act.

Also, anyone throwing out "groomers" makes me think they must be into the Qanon garbage.

I've known several "queens" and "kings," and for all of them, drag shows was where they could have fun and be stars and admired. I try to keep up with "Coco," whose life is evolving into great sadness. CVS drugstore clerk by day and drag queen by night, but 2 years ago he ignored his diabetes and has now lost both his legs. So sorry about this.

Tennessee is the buckle on the Bible Belt.....most Tennesseans are scared shtls of anything homophobic in nature......

when I was a high school senior we staged a powder puff football game where the girls were the players and some of us boys were cheerleaders and majorettes and beauty queens to raise money for school proms ......at the time never was there even a thought of it being something to be banned or stopped,,,,it was just fun......it was a great success and everyone in the town had a a great laugh....today in Tennessee it would be prohibited
