A Newport mother is appealing a court's decision after a judge ordered her son's name be changed from "Messiah."Jaleesa Martin and the father of Messiah could not agree on a last name, which is how they ended up at a child support hearing in Cocke County Chancery Court on Thursday.
That is when the first name came into question.
...
Judge Ballew ordered the 7-month-old's name be "Martin DeShawn McCullough." It includes both parent's last names but leaves out Messiah.
"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," Judge Ballew said.
if this is true, based on the info i read this judge is mentally insane and retarded
Messiah is a terrible choice for a given name anyway.![]()

Bad judge...
I think it is a wonderful judge. Children should have appropriate names and not names that would lead to a life or ridicule and harassment.
It could be much worse:Messiah is a terrible choice for a given name anyway.![]()

Get out. Do you really think a baby's name should be a matter of judicial revue?
Unless your name is Ziggy, Dweezel or Moon Unit you don't have a case.
Come on. You don't really mean that do you? Or are you just trying to pull our peter, Peter?

I saw this and I just knew there would be some extenuating circumstances to this case that would make it not so ridiculous. From the look of it, I was wrong. That was just a painfully bad decision by that judge, and an even worse justification she gives.
Quite right, the government should have the duty and the right to protect it from parents who do not have the decency to give the child a name that does not make it bullied and ridiculed.
Messiah is not an suitable name for a child.
You have a very strange idea of what the role of government is.
If you couldn't tell, I was partly joking. (The name is still horrible though)Maybe, but if he was Latino his name might be 'Jesus'. Do we want a judge to say it can't be?
