A group called the Chicago Tea Party Patriots publicly heckled a grieving family and suggested that the couple fabricated their tragic story.

That girl didn't die because she didn't have insurance. All the insurance in the world, obviously, wouldn't have kept her alive.

You realize that even if the grandmother's story was true, chances are having health insurance wouldn't have made any difference. Unless you take out an maternity rider on your policy, most health insurance plans don't cover pregnancy, which is considered a planned event.

Yes it would have made an difference, my cousin had prenatal care, and discovered that she had a rare disease. this disease is when the baby cord is half off the area were the baby get the stuff it needs .. She and the baby survived this encounter, and live another day.

You realize that all caps makes baby jesus cry?

There are assholes on both sides of the debate. Let's just call them assholes and move on, and not give them too much attention.

Not having health insurance doesn't mean that no one will give you pre-natal care.

What I see in that story is, at best, a fabricated story meant to play on the emotions and, at worst, a case of neglect by both the mother of the child and those closest to her. Neither of those has any bearing on the government taking over healthcare.

I doubt they are lying it just sad that people will do this to a grieving family.

Depends on state law. Here in Washington, they're required to offer maternity benefits. They also cannot discriminate by sex on the cost of the insurance. I agree, it definitely falls under a planned event as you can control pregnancy. So with the system here, you can get insurance just when you plan to have a pregnancy. Another argument for having a mandate...

Correct, insurance companies offer maternity benefits, but you still will have to add a rider to an existing policy. In addition, it must be done well before the pregnancy in order for coverage to take effect. Some maternity coverage options take as much as three years of premiums before they will actually pay out any benefits.

The bottom line in this case, is that not having coverage would not have prevented the mother from getting regular pre-natal care. Even if she had insurance, they probably wouldn't have paid for a routine pregnancy. For some reason, she didn't seek proper care and her loved ones did not prompt her to do so either. If it's true, it's a circumstance that could have been prevented, but, again, it has NO bearing on whether or not the government should be controlling my healthcare.

OP - that's just horrible.

It's one thing to be against something, but a lot of these people (not just in this particular situation) go to extremes which defeats the purpose.

I oppose the bill - but I'd never be like that.
I feel that the measures we have in place for pregnant mothers (Wic, welfare, etc) are fundamentally sufficient and could use a serious overhaul, and be thorough and fully functioning.

Perhaps you didn't understand. What I'm saying is the insurance companies are FORCED to include the maternity care with any insurance policy in Washington state. You don't add a rider, because it's impossible to obtain insurance that doesn't have it.

Looks like 18 states are this way, with mandatory maternity care.

That is true, I to am against this bill, because I believe that it gives to much leeway to the companies. I would never go to such links like this group did,

Perhaps you didn't understand...my point is that insurance may or may not have covered the mother, but that shouldn't matter. Nothing was stopping her from getting pre-natal care. Medicaid and other similar programs are in place to help mothers who cannot afford to pay for things on their own. Either the mother failed to take the steps needed to get care, or the government failed her, not private insurance (assuming she really couldn't afford it.) Is that the government you want having MORE control over your healthcare?

Think it over. I'll wait.

Edit: Btw, In the state this supposedly took place in, maternity benefits are mandatory on HMO's only.

Ok, look, you gotta quit using the huffington post in opening threads. Just don't. It's reputation is little more than a blog. Usually, if MSNBC doesn't pick up on it, we can pretty much count on that a) it wasn't very important, or b) It didn't happen, or c) it was just an isolated case that otherwise, should never go outside local issues.

In this case, I would argue that it was isolated. Just a nutjob being a nutjob. Lord knows the HufPo caters to the same crowd on their side. During the tea-bag march in washington, there wasn't a single arrest, so I highly doubt this is as politically motivated as HuffPo wants to say it is.

which companies? name a few.

Re: Tea Party Patriots Attack Family Who Lost Daughter And Grandchild

ABC got this one.

Sorry, I just think it gives to much to companies not to a few it doesn't name any. This is the braking news blog area, Not the breaking news for mass media section. I hardly use it in real debate thought.

No moreso than you do to yours.

what do you mean by that? What have I done that is bad to mine?

Re: Tea Party Patriots Attack Family Who Lost Daughter And Grandchild

See? It was only picked up by local stations, nothing more than an isolated incidence of crazy protestors, it happens all the time in every protest, sadly.

That's all fine and dandy but, if you wouldn't use it in real debate, then you should be the first to suspect faulty journalism.

As for me, there is no doubt this is highly over-exaggerated.
