Target's 'Trophy' Shirt Draws Sexism Claims

Let's see here -- at one end you have some grandstanding morons saying a tee shirt is part of a "rape culture" who have no sense of proportion because if they did, they would be trying to combat some real injustice like all the Female genital mutilation or honor killings, instead. On that, they are strangelky silent because it isn't P.C.

At the other end, you have some serious misogynists using terms like "feminazi" to describe anything THEY don't like.

What has happened to the sensible middle ground, anyway -- you know, like just being a responsible parent who raises daughters with the sort of self-esteem that is dependent on their actual accomplishments instead of needing to be somebody else's trophy, but who doesn't get all hyperbolic over a silly tee shirt when there are much bigger issues to contend with?

It trivializes the work of people who are trying to combat serious issues regarding women's rights when those looking for a safe cause decide to focus on a tee shirt, instead.

I have the freedom to express my opinion of your opinion. That's not restricting you.

It is when you go around demanding things stop being sold because you can't take a shirt that says trophy on it.

It's just this simple, Gardner.

"Sensible middle ground" is boring and doesn't cause a stir. It isn't particularly interesting and therefor it doesn't create headlines. It's still there, mind you, but it gets drowned out by the lunatic fringes who DO cause a stir and DO create headlines. Their lunacy gets a WAY disproportionate amount of coverage to the point where people start believing that they actually represent mainstream thought.

Target's 'Trophy' shirt draws sexism claims

This SJW nonsense has gotten completely ridiculous. "Perpetuates rape culture"? Really? Give me a freaking break. Why is it always the first move these people make is to create a petition to get something pulled off the shelves when they don't like it? Is it really that hard to... you know... just NOT BUY IT?!?!

I can't wait for the day that this "movement" of tumblrinas and twitheads completely buries itself under the weight of it's own stupidity.

I read this 3 times, and I am really having a hard time finding anything to be outraged about. And the comments on that online petition are really pathetic.

It would help if many of them weren't unattractive.

Just sayin'.

Exactly.. I've never seen a true Feminist from NOW that was even remotely good looking, at least 8 to 14 beers most of them. ;)

And that's being generous.

Tim-

I have the freedom to express my opinion of your opinion. That's not restricting you.

Why is this so difficult? Nobody cares if you express your opinion or criticism. However, if you then go and pressure a company into pulling something off the shelves that YOU don't like, rather than simply expressing your opinion that you don't like it, THAT is where the problem is. None of us want to force somebody that doesn't like this shirt into wearing it, so why defend the people that are trying to take away the freedom to buy the shirt from the people that may actually have a different opinion than you?

Come on man, I almost always agree with you on here and know you're a smart person. This is not very complicated.

Many of them you would die of alcohol poisoning before they became even remotely good looking. D:

That's because you obviously aren't a rabid SJW that wants to rid the world of everything you don't like.

I see a petition that a pathetic number of people have signed.

Ahem. Did you notice that since the news barrage yesterday that it has jumped from less than a thousand to nearly 13,000?

It's exactly the same as GTAV at Target all over again. I'd place a sizable wager that Target caves and pulls the shirt.

something sold to minors is a reference to behaviors exhibited and partaken by adults?

might want to be careful there.....

I'm just going off memory, I don't shop at Target routinely, but as I recall, you're either a kid or a developmentally-challenged (growth wise) adult to be in the "juniors" section.

Yeah, check out this tiny little developmentally-challenged adult or little kid here:

It is when you go around demanding things stop being sold because you can't take a shirt that says trophy on it.

I'm surprised the change.org petition didn't include the demand to pull the shirt and replace it one that is 3XL and has a "Male Tears" coffee cup printed on the front.

The best comment from the link had to be the first one.

"@Target under what circumstances should any human being wear a T-shirt that indicates that they are a "trophy"

All the while her profile picture is saying, OMG, have you seen my boobs lately?

It is when you go around demanding things stop being sold because you can't take a shirt that says trophy on it.

No it's not. That's expressing my opinion. If Target is persuaded to stop selling that shirt, that's their choice. Target is a business. If enough customers seem to want a particular product sold, or not sold, they'll generally listen to that. They'll do what they believe is in their best financial interest. We call that the free market. Sometimes it doesn't go the way you personally want it to. But that's not an assault on your freedom.

Find another company that sells it, if you still want it. Failing that, print your own shirt. You have that choice, and always have.

Target doesn't sell the brand of hotsauce I prefer, but you don't see me going around saying my choices are being limited, or my freedom is being attacked.

So what? It's a business. They make decisions based on the bottom line. Sometimes the free market doesn't go your way. Start your own t-shirt printing company and print whatever you want, if you think that's a profitable venture. But don't go around demanding a company go against its own best interest just so a t-shirt you never wanted in the first place stays for sale.

When you talk about "SJWs," that's what you're really doing. Complaining that other peoples' freedom of speech and the free market is doing something you personally don't agree with. I'm not going to censor my opinion just so you don't feel uncomfortable about whatever opinion you're expressing.

Haha. I retract the last 4 words of my second to last sentence in post 81. I was mistaken.

Dude thinks the free market should be dictated by a tiny group of ***holes that scream foul/rape/bigot at the most ridiculous nonsense. They COULD just decide to vote with their wallet by not buying it like normal people, but NOOOOOO, they scream and cry and demand that everyone else do whatever it is they are pushing so it doesn't hurt their precious delicate FEELS.

Yeah. Total "free market" there.

I am with you. It is like WTF. As I type this post it has grown to 9 pages and I am still asking myself, WTF. Is this really worth 9 pages of posts? It gives me a chuckle that some people actually think it is important tho. Gotta thank them for that.

These people are professional victims, they are outraged about anything they dislike and they demand that everything that disagrees with them be banned from the public sphere.

If it was really such a minor concern, Target would ignore it. Or, they might pay attention anyway and lose business. Either way, the market sorts that sort of thing out.

Funny, you pretend you're in favor of free expression, but get alllllll upset whenever that free expression results in something you disagree with.

;)

Wrong again. What is on the line here isn't just them losing business, which I would agree with and it would be fair. But no, this isn't about business, none of those people were going to buy that shirt ANYWAY. What's actually going on is Target is getting blasted with accusations of perpetuating RAPE CULTURE. They are "physically and severely DAMAGING women's rights". They are "contributing to the patriarchy". Tell me Deuce, would YOU like to be publicly supporting those things? I am guessing no... as nobody would.

So they'll pull the item and make this tiny group happy to stop the social and mainstream media heat. And that my friend is straight up bullying. Call it whatever you want, but I don't think that's fair.

That is 100% absolute BS. I don't go and demand that a shirt that says "Die Cis Scum" gets pulled. I don't demand that tumblr silences all of these idiots. I don't demand that any of these ridiculous SJW games get pulled.

I just... don't... buy them. Pretty simple concept.

Let's explore this further.

Why do you think Target cares about appearing to be "damaging women''s rights?"

Good for you. You don't care enough, so you don't act. Other people do care enough, so they do.

Are all boycotts evil, in your opinion?

Because NOBODY does. Pretty silly question there, because whether you are a billion dollar multi-national corporation or just some joe schmoe on the street, being called a bigot or somebody that is adding to rape culture doesn't sit well.

Good question there. No, I do not think all boycotts are evil. And before you say "oh so it's fine when YOU agree with it then?"... let me clarify. There are boycotts that I agree with and disagree with in general. Where things like this differ is that they are making up absolutely asinine assertions like this single shirt that says "trophy" on it is somehow influencing a real world thing.

Boycott Nike because they use child labor? "Sorry, I'm still going to buy their stuff, but boycott away."

Boycott a car maker for moving a plant to Mexico? "Sorry, I'll still consider them for my next vehicle purchase, but I understand your concern so boycott away."

Boycott a petfood company because pets are dying from it? "Yeah, I'll get on board with that."

Petition Target to get GTAV pulled off the shelves because it perpetuates violence against women in real life? "Oh go **** yourself."

I hope that clarified my position on the matter.

It really doesn't. You start off denying that it's fine when you agree with them, but give absolutely no indication of what constitutes acceptable and why. As far as I can tell, this is entirely based on your personal opinion which is what everyone else is doing.

$12.99? What really sickening here is the 30 cents it took to make that shirt in a Malaysian sweatshop.
