Snarky political slang

It's a lot easier to come up with a negative sounding word to describe anyone who disagrees with one's point of view than it is to actually analyze an issue and take a reasoned stance on it. Making up terms, or misusing them is pretty common on these forums:

"Socialist" doesn't always mean socialist.
"liberal" "libtard" "lib" "libby" can mean pretty much anything.
"neocon" has totally lost its meaning.

In my estimation, when people 'go there', it means "Game over. You won. I have nothing."

Generally, when people resort to name calling, it can be safely assumed that their argument is weak.

I don't 'go there'. I start there, and god help them if I can prove it.

I know. And for the most part, I either ignore people who do so, or discount damn near every word they post.

teabaggers
reich wing
mKKKain
all seem to get the other side's panties in a wad
OP (or others) explain to me why that is a bad thing

and it is not a recent activity
here are newt's notes:

THATS what I was thinking, that these terms are being manufactured and distributed.

But they are off-putting to many, and "persuasion" doesn't usually work that way.

So is it spontaneous or some new "trick" of which I am unaware?

You're liberal, so it's okay. The OP only notices it when it comes from the right.

Dang it! I couldn't think of a lefty one when I wrote the OP. It took me a minute to come up with libtard.

I responded to Tessa that I was trying to comment on the behavior itself, not claiming the left doesn't do it too.

I DO contend that I see it more from the right than the left. But really from certain types of poster on the right.

Sorry for not being clearer.:2wave:

I contend the same. My guess is by roughly a 2-1 margin.

You start with meaningless political labels? Why?

Meaningless? Sometimes they are true. You just gotta find the real ones and prove it in a funny way. You think there are no libtards? What color is the sky in your world? They might be an elusive breed, requiring near complete isolation and only brief and hysterical encounters with those of similar conviction - but they exist.

Crazy is there.

I find it and I point it out. I say "Hey! That's crazy! Here's why...". We all have a laugh at the tard (of whatever persuasion) and move along whistling a happy tune. Don't let me catch any tard crap comin' outta you.

I get that, but belittling others can be fun.

I am un chien andalusia.

ps. No one tell WhatIf what that means, k?

Pure guess, no Google, some kinda horse, from Andalusia.

Now I'm gonna look it up!

Dang, dog.

Oh well. Your point?:2wave:

Oh. Yes. :wince: ouch. It's almost like being back in high school.

Just curious about the "we're seeing lately" part. Have you not followed politics or the news since...say...1964?

Now see? That was GOOD snark. Not lame.

I'm not THAT old. Well ok, I'm exactly that old, but for the first twelve years or so it was the pinnacle of comedy.

Poopy head!

I think that, based on which side you align with, you're more likely to see the insulting or inflammatory actions from the opposition than from those with whom you align. I would venture to say that it's pretty even on this board, over all.

Pixies song, Debaser. The line is in three languages, I thought you might appreciate that too.

Oh. Yes. :wince: ouch. It's almost like being back in high school.

Like you could remember.

Ya see, when you do that, apportion more blame to the right, that's really all I read. It's like **** it, if that's all you see from "us" why bother to do it differently?

A matter of perspective...imagine that.

why would you have moved to do it differently, otherwise?

I agree about insulting/inflammatory being fairly equally distributed.

I was referring more to the silly names and terms. I don't know if its the anti-intellectual thing or what. But its gradeschool, regardless.

The types of posters who do this constantly aren't trying to further debate or win people over.

Its cheerleading, bandwagon behavior. Responding to someone who indulges in it is a waste of time.

Unless you can get them to do it over and over and over.

We've spoken enough here, you know what I'm talking about.

Namecalling is intentionally divisive, and diversionary. I was wondering if it has some "persuasive" value I was unaware of.

If the definition of libtard, libby, lib, leftie, right winger, LWL, RWNJ, or neocon is "anyone who disagrees with my point of view", then there are quite a few of them around for sure.

"Libtards"

This one irks me tremendously, not because it is a slight against liberals but because it is a slight against those with special needs.

People need to grow the **** up and be compassionate. To anybody who uses this term, stop doing it. DON'T EVER USED THE WORD "RETARDED" AS AN INSULT.

Or really, don't use it at all.

No, What if, it's not persuasive at all. I don't think it's meant to be. There's a couple reasons for it, sometimes it's just a way to rattle someone's chain and other times, you just get, well, pissed and return tit for tat. I certainly am not above it myself but I do try not to do it, since it's really just a way to score cheap points. Sometimes though, the high road gives me a nosebleed.
