So ladies, what are your awesome secret(or not so secret) skin care tips?

Homemade remedies especially, since they are far cheaper than buying a product. For example, I wash my face twice a week with a mixture of sugar, and water, works great, and is far cheaper than buying a facial scrub.

At my age, cell turnover slows waaaaaay down, so I use an enzyme mask 1 or 2 times weekly to exfoliate, and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, because I've always had dry skin, and living in Texas can be pretty hard on your skin even if it's oily or combo.
The enzyme mask is very inexpensive, because I use bromelain capsules and a few drops of water to make it. To have one done professionally would cost about $60-$80 per treatment.

My mom gave me a recipe for something similar as a monthly mask. She mixes sugar and olive oil, leaving it on her face for about 20-30 minutes. As I understand it, the sugar reacts with the olive oil to make a very mild acid. I forget the term though. :2razz:

She also swears by the Clarisonic skin brush and so she got me one and I swear by it. I have trouble with most facial cleansers, so she turned me onto Estee Lauder Perfectly Clean Splash Away Foaming Cleanser, which I use daily with the Clarisonic.

Her skin is amazing. She's in her 70's and were it not for her white hair and her neck, she could easily pass for 50's or even 40's. So I pay attention to her advice.

YS, I have a new homemade tip for you. I've been meaning to post it for a couple weeks. I finally remembered.

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. I was reading about Ginnifer Goodwin's favorite skin care item and this was it. Her skin is beautiful, so I think that's a good enough reason to try it. She uses it a moisturizer on her face, but you can use it any where. Some people advocate using it in place of other oils in food. I haven't been brave enough for that, but I have been using it on my face for about a month. The scent is very light, it doesn't take long to absorb on my face or hands and my biggest concern was clogging my pores, but so far, so good. My son's GF is Native American. She was telling me the other day that her blemishes, which are very usual for non-white skin, have been greatly reduced.

Here is the container I bought on Amazon, though I've noticed you can find it nicer markets. I haven't seen it at Target yet.

Great idea for a thread. I've never used an expensive skin product until just lately. Vitamin C capsules. I've noticed a difference even though I have a great complexion thanks to genes. I've gotten comments from others about it -- which is the best indication that it works.

I also found a product on HSN that adds eyebrow hairs -- so you can thicken your eyebrows and follow the latest trends. I think that's what lots of women do -- they keep doing things the same way they did them in high school. Cosmetic use and eyeglass frames -- can be very "dating."

Edit: I'm going to try Gina's Olive Oil and Sugar idea. Sounds good.

It's the lanolin- the stuff they recommend to breast-feeding moms for their "issues".

The very best dry and cracked hand treatment that I have found (and I've tried many over the years, due to my gardening addiction), is Neutrogena hand cream. Excellent stuff.

I use this on my hair. I did a bit of research (because I have fine hair that tends to frizz) and coconut oil is one of the only oils that can penetrate hair. Also, it's very good for the scalp. I despise everything about coconut--including the smell--but I use this on a regular basis. Just nuke it so it becomes liquid and spread all of hair and scalp. Cover with a towel or shower cap for about an hour or so.

I didn't know that about coconut oil. I've always had to be careful about oils on my hair, mine is fine too. I had been using Moroccan oil. I'll have to try it your way. Great tip, MG!

I eat a least a spoonful of coconut oil everyday. That stuff is good for everything.

Forgive me, I couldn't help it. Topically, no I don't. But, I've read where coconut oil is good for you for many reasons. It's the only oil I cook with.

Ya know, since I am probably the most inadequate female ever in this particular arena, I should probably defer to you ladies...

I am not all that fussed about looking young forever, but I'd sure love not to look like a leather bag or have skin cancer.

I have olive skin and Mediterranean genes, which has gotten me into a bad habit. I completely ignore sunscreen, simply because I can. I know I won't get away with that forever, and it's not like I sunbathe or anything, but I can't help thinking to myself, "Why? I won't burn. I'll be fine."

Well, not just that. Also because I HATE sunscreen. It feels greasy and oily and burns and it's disgusting. Plus, apparently, if you apply it wrong, it actually makes things worse. I didn't know you could apply it "wrong," but if anyone can, I'm sure it's me. I just hate the stuff.

I know I should use something while I can still protect my skin from too much damage. I found out in New Zealand, after the lack of an ozone layer finally got me, that I am not immune. I still have sun damage on my shoulders.

Is there any sunprotectant type thing you ladies know of that is not all of those things I hate? Either a sunscreen that doesn't have whatever weird ingrediants make my skin feel burn-y or over-oily, or something that can be used instead of market sunscreen?

I don't need a high SPF. I just need *something.* Anything.

My wife uses Earth Balance Coconut Spread - had to go look in the refrigerator. I think she gets it at Whole Foods. She eats it on toast.

I simply eat a spoonful every morning. I like the taste. Some people put it in tea. Some people put it in coffee. Ain't no way I'm doing that to a good cup of coffee. Other ways we use it besides cooking is in smoothies. I even use it to fry eggs. You really can't taste it that way, though I'll admit coconut flavored eggs doesn't sound too appealing. There's not much taste that way.

We do not use it for salad oil, but pretty much every way you'd use oil coconut oil works and it's healthy.

I don't need a high SPF. I just need *something.* Anything.

I don't normally use sunscreen much, but this one gets excellent reviews. For just general use, if I need one, I just use the BullFrog stuff. My facial moisturizer has sunscreen in it, and if I'm going to be in the sun for a long time, and it's warm out, I just wear a light-weight, loose weave thin cotton shirt with longish sleeves. I don't like the way sunscreen makes my skin feel either, so I usually avoid being out in the worst of the heat.

Of course, using some home remedies for your skin care is really best, as these are really cheap and without any side effects. As I use to scrub and cover my face with some home-made skin care products once or twice in a week and feel quite okay with it. And use soap only twice a day on my face otherwise only wash with fresh and cool water after one and half to two-hour.
