Site slow

Specifically, it loads a few avatars/pictures first ... then the site freezes, then it loads more avatars at the bottom of the site, then freezes again and then loads a few arrows on top of the page.

This process to load a single page takes ca. 30 seconds combined vs. 0.5 seconds about two months ago ...

We've made a change which should improve performance. Please let us know if you are or aren't seeing an improvement on your end.

I don't know if it makes a difference...

But Desktop wasn't too bad. I use Alerts a lot, if I had 10-15, I'd right click open in new tab. And then proceed to the news tab. It was slower but not that bad.

Where I ran into problems with slowness was mostly mobile web browsser (iPhone, Safari). I'd click the Alert icon and it would take a long time (30 seconds or so) for the Alert drop down to pupulate. Since I was on a phone I'd start at the bottom, mentally note the time, and go to that one thread. Rinse repeat.

So it was mobile browsing that was annoying.

But thank you very much for looking into this.

Site is still freezing and not loading properly the avatars/images of users and when clicking "mark forums read".

Nowhere the speed of what it was 2 months ago, before these problems surfaced ... it took 0.5 seconds for pages to load then, now 20-30 seconds :(
Thank you for the information. What we did this morning will make a difference, but we have other steps we can take.

Still takes multiple attempts to open “alerts.” Multiple clicks needed to refresh the pages. 1620 EDT

It's maybe a tiny bit faster now, but the site still freezes instantly after accessing it, then loads half the user avatars on the right, then freezes for 20 seconds (instead of 30) and then loads the rest of the user avatars at the bottom of the page plus the arrows on top where it says "members", "awards" etc.

The freezing and 20-seconds wait is annoying and not anywhere where it was 2 months ago when it loaded all pages in a few milliseconds.

Do you have to increase storage or reaction time with your hosts maybe ? I'm no computer expert.

So, after doing a bit of research, we've discovered a couple of things. The website tends to run much faster on Chrome versus other browsers. Reloading the page tends to help as well. We've seen the slowdowns today and it is frustrating. We are planning on upgrading the XF software on the morning of Monday, May 26th (Memorial Day). This may or may not make a difference, but we're trying to exhaust all possibilities as to why the site is slow to respond at certain times now that we've put the DDoS attack behind us.

Please bear with us as we try to get the site back up to the quick and responsive DP we're all accustomed to.

Still quite slow and I’m using Chrome.

Curious, how did you manage to deal with the DOoS attack. They weren’t rotating IP addresses to keep you from blocking, which is sop for the bastards?

I have pretty much stuck to using SlimJet as the browser for posting on this site and I am basically not having any slow troubles. Not sure if that can be of any help, but - - - well, just in case. Of course, you can see my IP address for location. Using the older Fujitsu with Windows 7 at this work station and it isn't any sort of powerhouse unit. I've got a number of units if you'd like me to test what happens with some of the others. Never use the Android for this sort of Net activity, so that's out at my end for testing. Oh yes, the Windows 7 was getting some special updates I paid for a bit back. Still getting security updates. I think those others were stopped by Microsoft. I've got a number of operating systems at this work station, too. But no Windows 11. I'm getting about fed up with Microsoft. Windows 10 was the last OS I bought from them.

Site is slow - both on my iphone and desktop, using Chrome. Probably gettting worse over the last few weeks.

I also occasionally see formatting issues when accessing posts - usually resolves with a refresh.

I'll also note that on the phone, I often will access the site and it will look like I'm not logged in, and I hit the login button and it then displays a banner telling me I'm logged in already, and to click a highlighted 'here' word to get me back to the usual start page. This has been going on for at least a month or so.

Still hinky, accessing “alerts” takes two or three tries and then a full page is displayed instead of the usual dropdown menu in the upper right.

Posting this here since the other thread is closed now. @RedAkston.

I use the Shades of Blue theme. Since the upgrade, when you post text and make it a link, the link text appears white, not blue as before. There's no indication it's linked. If you mouse over it, it turns black/very dark font and underlined but you can barely see it because it's so dark. I tested this in the 3.1 theme and the text is light blue there, so you can tell it's linked.

Also the red highlighted "active" text for pages, for example, is less visible in Shades of Blue than white text. Bolding it would probably help. I'm a big fan of color altho it's not always accessibility-friendly...but also not when it doesnt work as intended. (UX writer)

Y’all making any progress?

More testing/tweaking/reboots in the am. Expect multiple up/down and errors. Depends when i wakeup.

Like 4-5am CST.

The site now seems a bit faster with almost no delays on my Firefox desktop PC browser.

But still lagging badly on Apple Ipad (Safari). I also cleared the cache or use private mode with no cookies stored, but it doesn't change anything.

Thanks for the update and recommended fix.

I haven't had an issue for a while now.

I don't know which thread the it was in, but thanks for putting the trending content below the latest posts and latest threads.

Odd - I have no delete function for the post above.

Maybe it's only this section of the forum? Other posts I've made are delete-able.

Seems to be. That's less of a problem, but still it would be nice to have it here too.

I've just discovered, quite by accident, an odd problem. Let me try to explain and I do have screenshots of this; twice happening.

I do a post. The last check, I waited about two minutes, --- I do a post and then log out and as a 'Guest' on the "new posts" list I see my User ID and the timestamp of the post, but when I click on that I am shown the threads first post and when I scroll down, my post isn't there.

The first time it happened quickly, so that is why the second time I waited about 2 minutes and it happened again. There could be a lag in time, except the fact that the "New posts" list shows the post as being there - - - well, it's weird.

Now the first time I logged back in and checked because I thought maybe I was in some sort of admin trouble and my post had been quickly deleted and I saw it was there after I logged in and somebody else had posted after that one and I logged out and that post was showing while I was in "Guest" mode.

The second time I didn't go through that full circle. I did grab the "New posts" list screenshot, though and then that my post wasn't showing while I was in "Guest" mode.

Not really such a big deal, except it might indicate a bigger problem not yet recognized. Or it could just be a "little" glitch and no big deal. Can't say it's any sort of inconvenience and I did find out quite by accident. Just seemed a proper thing to do to report it.

Oh, I'll try and see if it happens again with this post.

EDIT: Nope, it didn't happen with this post. Mighty interesting.
AND: It didn't happen just now in the other thread where this started. A kind of one-off glitch, I guess. Very interesting.

Guests are seeing a cached version of the forum, so there is a delay in what they see.

Not sure why you're posting, logging off and then back on again. Weird...

I sort of thought the cache file was involved in some manner. Thank you. Was just trying to be helpful.

The "weird" happened because I was wondering if the "You are ignoring" banner was showing to guests. That shows even in the quote box if you are logged in. Not if you are a guest.
