That (bolded above) assertion is not accurate - about half of them (deemed non-essential) simply received an extended (yet delayed) paid vacation and were able to moonlight if they were so inclined. Others were required to work for delayed (yet assured) pay and also took some leave which will be given back to them as a special perk.

The brunt of the "shutdown" costs were incurred by government contractors (who will get no pay) and other private businesses (e.g. daycare providers and restaurants) which would have otherwise enjoyed business (as usual) from those furloughed contractors and federal employees.

Personally I think the best thing that can happen is if Trump vetoes debt limit increases until our treasuries are junk because then congress will have no choice but to balance the budget. Also all republicans recruited for congressional races in the future should sign pledges they will not protect any constituency groups from budget cuts even if it means losing reelection

Even when they're in power, they don't make any moves to meaningfully cut spending. They're happy to increase spending while simultaneously slashing government revenue. They only bitch about deficits when a D is president. They are not to be listened to.

Raising taxes one penny should be a non starter. The reason taxes are as high as they are now when they should be at the pre-civil war level of 3-5 percent on imports is because of a massive welfare state and military industrial complex. The problem is not lack of taxes it is over spending. Massive austerity is what’s needed. Our business tax rates need to go even lower. We cannot tax our way out of deficit and in fact no one in the Democratic Party is proposing increases in taxes to Clinton level to plug the deficit, they’re proposing national suicide tax rates to pay for a “green new deal” and “Medicare for all”.

Yes the Republicans have some problems because “moderate” “bipartisan” republicans you love to praise fear losing reelection if the welfare and corporate cronyism stops and the democrats are mobilizing on those issues. Trump would sign massive budget cuts, but short minded voters will never vote to detach themselves from the tentacles of the welfare state.

No, the misuse of FICA money was certainly a cause, but the cause of congressional misuse does not alter reality that entitlements are the single biggest budget problem we have. And the truth is we always knew that, I was listening to Jim Bohannon last year and he referenced reporting on deficits coming on social security in 1980s, voters didn’t care then, they don’t care now. So again voters repeatedly sent representatives who raided FICA Tax surpluses, but those surpluses wouldn’t have lasted forever anyway. When most women will tie their tubes after two kids and that’s if they have children at all a social security system like we have is simply unsustainable, and changing society and demographics spell doom for the system as structured. It makes no sense for an entitlement system that was created in an era of large poor families and short lifespans to not change now that families are smaller and lifespans far longer
