WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy was expected to lose $3 billion from the partial federal government shutdown over President Donald Trump’s demand for border wall funding, congressional researchers said on Monday as 800,000 federal employees returned to work after a 35-day unpaid furlough.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said the cost of the shutdown will make the U.S. economy 0.02 percent smaller than expected in 2019. More significant effects will be felt by individual businesses and workers, particularly those who went without pay.
================================================
Trump's vanity project, the unnecessary southern border wall that he campaigned on, will cost the U.S. economy $3B. This result shows a complete lack of leadership & compassion. And he has darkly promised more to come.

V. Putin must be laughing his donkey off.

That's pretty sad.

I hope they really do come up with a way to prevent these idiotic shutdowns from happening anymore.

That (bolded above) assertion is not accurate - about half of them (deemed non-essential) simply received an extended (yet delayed) paid vacation and were able to moonlight if they were so inclined. Others were required to work for delayed (yet assured) pay and also took some leave which will be given back to them as a special perk.

The brunt of the "shutdown" costs were incurred by government contractors (who will get no pay) and other private businesses (e.g. daycare providers and restaurants) which would have otherwise enjoyed business (as usual) from those furloughed contractors and federal employees.

That way is to have congress critters pass the required 'budget' bills before the start of the FY.

Democrats would rather pour billions down the toilet than upgrade the border fencing they voted for.

Says he, in defense of the first President to have us spending almost $1,000,000,000,000 a year in a good economy, a president who even told the above poster that he would be responsible for the shutdown.

Naturally, both that president and the poster are firmly on the right.

Personally I think the best thing that can happen is if Trump vetoes debt limit increases until our treasuries are junk because then congress will have no choice but to balance the budget. Also all republicans recruited for congressional races in the future should sign pledges they will not protect any constituency groups from budget cuts even if it means losing reelection

Well forunately Chuck and Nancy will be passing the hard budgets that really cut the spending

The behavior of the bulk of the right under the last two Republican administrations as compared to its behavior under Obama proves that the bulk of the right is completely, utterly, and irredeemably full of **** when it comes to caring about the deficits or debt.

Even when they're in power, they don't make any moves to meaningfully cut spending. They're happy to increase spending while simultaneously slashing government revenue. They only bitch about deficits when a D is president. They are not to be listened to.

They want what all that spending provides. That's why they never try to do anything about it. In fact, the only spending they wish they could cut is spending that helps people less fortunate than them. That really grinds their gears. It's all political hackery, really.

We need to ramp taxes back up to Clinton levels at least, calibrate until the budget is balanced, and only then, once we're feeling the cost of all the things we want, make some final decisions about spending. But no, much better to try to perpetuate another dishonest red meat issue, while borrowing almost a trillion a year to give handouts to the richest entities. (Well, ok, 600ish billion. Yearly debt service is something like 400 billion, I think).

Sorry....were you saying something? Oh right. Just the usual blah blah blah liberals are bad blah blah blah.

It never ceases to amaze me that the same people who are running on a platform of Medicare for all which will cost in excess of a TRILLION dollars a year are complaining about $6 Billion for a wall.

Congress would override that (bolded above) for sure. To "balance the budget" by raising personal federal income tax revenue would require a 40% increase or cutting over 100% of non-defense, federal "discretionary" spending - i.e. touching the 'third rail' of cutting "entitlement" spending.

Raising taxes one penny should be a non starter. The reason taxes are as high as they are now when they should be at the pre-civil war level of 3-5 percent on imports is because of a massive welfare state and military industrial complex. The problem is not lack of taxes it is over spending. Massive austerity is what’s needed. Our business tax rates need to go even lower. We cannot tax our way out of deficit and in fact no one in the Democratic Party is proposing increases in taxes to Clinton level to plug the deficit, they’re proposing national suicide tax rates to pay for a “green new deal” and “Medicare for all”.

Yes the Republicans have some problems because “moderate” “bipartisan” republicans you love to praise fear losing reelection if the welfare and corporate cronyism stops and the democrats are mobilizing on those issues. Trump would sign massive budget cuts, but short minded voters will never vote to detach themselves from the tentacles of the welfare state.

The democrats have never ran in good faith on lowering deficits

I mean, the idiocy that comes from right wingers on this forum is truly amazing. What do you consider pouring billions down the toilet? something that actually helps actual Americans, like going to provide them healthcare, provide solid infrastructure, or a pointless wall in which every single bit of fact shows is the epitome of a waste of time.

Stop posting such stupid **** just to troll, its pathetic

Convinced they are just complete and utter assholes. There is no working with these scumbags, best to get others involved in politics so these vocal minority assholes don't have a say and they can go climb under their rocks for good this time

One provides healthcare for citizen, helping people who are dying becuase they don't have insurance, or are bankrupt or in poverty to pay for it.

Vs a dumb, pointless wall that does nothing for nobody and doesn't even address immigration issues.

Yeah, more intentional, pathetic, right wing idiotic trolling

I see you did not even bother to learn what the thread was about before inflicting your opinions on us.

Not sure what any of this has to do with the fact that Democrats would prefer to pour billions down the toilet than upgrade the border fencing they voted for.

Yeah, I’m saying we should cut all entitlements and Rip off the bandaids. Everyone benefitting from entitlements is complicit in the problem and should have the shoulder the solution.

And the military could certainly use some trimming as well as Arms manufacturers.

It’s not the federal government’s role to “help Americans” by giving them taxpayer money, it is the government’s role to secure the exterior borders of our nation.

No need to get all worked up. I am simply pointing out the reality of the congressional 'budget' situation. That is why I noted the enormity of the annual federal deficit and pointed out the difficulty (impossibility?) of having a balanced budget.

The idea that entitlements are the bulk of the problem ignores reality since the bulk of entitlement spending is funded by the FICA payroll tax which until very recently created a significant surplus (the "trust me" fund) which, of course, was borrowed and spent.

No, the misuse of FICA money was certainly a cause, but the cause of congressional misuse does not alter reality that entitlements are the single biggest budget problem we have. And the truth is we always knew that, I was listening to Jim Bohannon last year and he referenced reporting on deficits coming on social security in 1980s, voters didn’t care then, they don’t care now. So again voters repeatedly sent representatives who raided FICA Tax surpluses, but those surpluses wouldn’t have lasted forever anyway. When most women will tie their tubes after two kids and that’s if they have children at all a social security system like we have is simply unsustainable, and changing society and demographics spell doom for the system as structured. It makes no sense for an entitlement system that was created in an era of large poor families and short lifespans to not change now that families are smaller and lifespans far longer
