Should the United States do away with Thanksgiving and the 4th of July as designated public holidays in favor of something more inline with changing demographics?
Ethically? Probably. But I love turkey so I celebrate thanksgiving even though I'm not American or in AmericaShould the United States do away with Thanksgiving and the 4th of July as designated public holidays in favor of something more inline with changing demographics?
This point of view is repugnant and offensive, as well as being wrong and stupid!Should the United States do away with Thanksgiving and the 4th of July as designated public holidays in favor of something more inline with changing demographics?
I chalk up most of my nephews political views to being college age but over a weekend BBQ they seemed pretty adamant that some of our public (federally recognized) holidays were insensitive to minorities in this country. They seemed to view Thanksgiving and July 4th as particularly offensive.
The reason we'd discuss/consider Thanksgiving is pretty obvious but could you explain how "changing demographics" would impact the propriety of celebrating the 4th of July?
Far as I know we don't have such a large expat British population that our having kicked their ass a few centuries ago would be such a social taboo.

Their is nothing wrong with firework fun especially since I know a grand spot to watch the AC casino fireworks. Thanksgiving is like Columbus day a bit wrong since it has to do with the death of native people.

All holidays are insensitive to the clinically depressed and the pathologically humorless - two minorities that seem to be growing by leaps and bounds. And even if we replace all current festivities with one egalitarian Day When You Buy Gifts For No Reason Whatsoever, it will be deeply offensive for the very poor, the anti-commercialists, and the stingy. Ergo, no more holidays, period.
Also, I think everyone should wear burkas, just in case. Even men. Especially men, now that I think about it.
I don't believe we should do away with either holiday but I guess the thought process is that we're essentially celebrating the actions of what is seen as a single ethnicity, white.
Thats a new one..............
People who do not know what Thanksgiving is about should NOT celebrate it, or they should learn about it.....either way....
Maybe we should not have a Columbus Day; but a Discovery Day instead....actually Columbus discovered nothing....nothing that had already been discovered...
The far truer pioneers were the Vikings and the "native Americans".

And if these people really find things offensive, then what do they propose as alternatives ?

Thanksgiving has to do with the death of the Native people or did I just read this wrong?
If so, that is a new one on me.....
I don't call them Native Americans since they probably did not want to become Americans in the first place so I call them Natives since they are Native to the area . Learning history is always a good thing though ...
Mostly we break bread they help us and in return we take their land and kill their people . Any talk of the atrocities in school have been kept to a minimum and I had to find out about the small pox blankets on the history channel .
"America" doesn't only refer to this nation, but two entire continents.
Either is better than Indian, though, because I'm not sure if anybody noticed but this area is not even remotely close to India.
