President Obama spoke from the White House's South Lawn this morning, urging Congress to end the $4 billion in tax subsidies oil and natural gas companies receive from the government every year. Obama noted that "Exxon pocketed nearly $4.7 million every hour" last year, and simply doesn't need taxpayer subsidies on top of companies' massive profits.
The president added "it's like hitting the American people twice."
Soon after, the Senate voted on the issue, and though a majority of members agreed with the president, a majority is no longer enough in the upper chamber.
The Senate on Thursday thwarted Democratic plans to strip billions of dollars in tax breaks from the largest oil companies, just an hour or so after President Obama urged the chamber to kill off the deductions.Even if the bill had gained Senate approval, House passage was extremely unlikely, but the vote will likely play a role in the Democrats' election-year message. Vulnerable incumbents like Sens. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and Dean Heller (R-Nev.) toed the party line on oil subsidies, and it seems likely that voters in Massachusetts and Nevada will be reminded of this morning's vote in the fall.
Lawmakers voted 51-47 to block Sen. Robert Menendez's (D-N.J.) bill. Sixty votes were needed to advance the measure.
Two Republicans -- Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snow, both from Maine -- crossed party lines and voted to repeal the tax breaks. Four Democrats -- Sens. Mark Begich (Alaska), Mary Landrieu (La.), Ben Nelson (Neb.) and Jim Webb (Va.) -- voted against the bill.

So Republicans really hate handing out money right? The only hand outs they give away are to big business and oil companies, the rest of the American people that just say "**** you" too. Ridiculous...

I thought Harry Reid runs the Senate. He's a Democrat right?
So, show what money is actually being handed out to the oil companies. Thanks, in advance, as always.

My only thoughts are: Who gives a damn what Maddow thinks? Show her an issue...any issue...and she'll twist, bend, fold and mutilate the issue until she succeeds in making the Democrats look like good guys and Republicans like bad guys.
Does anyone in their right mind EVER agree with her?
So he controls how people vote? Just because you head of the Senate does not mean you control peoples votes... We are a representative democracy remember.... :doh
No wait you guys this doesn't count as government interference in the market, "picking winners," etc, because
Republicans are the biggest enablers of welfare dependency
So he couldn't get his caucus to vote against the subsidies? He needs to thrown out by his own, for being a ****ty leader (something we knew years ago).

If you actually read the article you would find out she never gave her opinion in the article itself. She just reported what happend, what the vote consisted of, who voted for it and against it...
Next time read the actual article.
The vast majority voted to end these ridiculous subsidies. Only 4 dems voted against the bill....
Let me tell you something about Harry Reid. This POS is MY Senator. He almost single-handedly has made sure that my State does not diversify and that any money flowing to/through Nevada goes to his buddies in the Casino business.
But he is clever and his opposition is not. In the 2010 elections, many of us Nevada citizens were so disgusted with him that we were ready to throw the bum out. So, what did the Republicans do? They select a complete crackpot to run against him with a message against drinking and GAMBLING. Yeah, right. That's just what we needed. So, by default, he handily won re-election.
And he's doing it again. He knew that this bill wouldn't fly. So, now the Republicans are the official protectors of these poor, impoverished OIL COMPANIES and Dirty Harry is the DEFENDER OF THE WORKING MAN. Since there are more working people (or non-working) people than there are Maybach owners, you can see where the next election is going. So, we will have 4 more years of this lame Obusha because the Repugnantcans have outsmarted themselves just to make sure 4 billion dollars stays in the hands of their precious 1%.
It's just depressing.
The headline was enough.
The VAST majority? hehehe
Uhh you cant handle factual information? :doh
LOL!!!
Oh, I can handle factual information easily enough...I just prefer to get it from credible sources. Maddow doesn't fit that bill.
