Barack Obama’s efforts to fulfil his promise of closing the Guantánamo Bay detention centre before he leaves office were dealt a significant blow on Tuesday as the Senate passed legislation preventing the administration from relocating prisoners to the United States. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which has the primary purpose of setting the US Defense Department budget, passed the Senate by an overwhelming majority of 91-3 in a faster-than-usual passage through Congress, designed in part to frustrate White House plans to announce a new Guantánamo closure strategy.

An earlier version of the NDAA was vetoed by the White House due to a separate row over budgeting, but this second attempt, which was passed by the House of Representatives last week, contains language blocking the transfer of prisoners to mainland US facilities.

The legislation now goes to the White House for the president’s signature, but will not be vetoed this time around due to the political necessity of funding the Defense Department – leaving the administration with much less room for manoeuvre as it seeks a solution to the long-running Guantánamo problem.

Obama has been in a standoff with Congress over what to do with remaining prisoners at the US base in Cuba almost ever since he assumed office. But he is preparing to unveil a new strategy in the next few days.

Never mind that it's cheaper and much more secure to send them to the supermax in Colorado where the Unabomber and one of the 9/11 architects already are.

But it was never about 'security', but just another what that the Right wants to stop Obama from accomplishing anything at all, no matter how sensible it may be.

It passed 91-3, so that would be the Right & the Left?

Let that kind of resonate for a second...

91....to 3.

And of course to Guy...thats 'the right'. Because...of COURSE it is.

:doh

And what "poison pill" riders were attached to the bill?

You need to learn how things work in Washington - if the Senate Majority Leader allows riders to be attached to bills (as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) is allowing), then, for example, if the bill to close Gitmo includes a rider to defund Planned Parenthood, if a Democrat votes for that, then in the next election his opponents can claim "He voted to defund Planned Parenthood!", never mind that the main purpose of the bill was to close Gitmo. That's why it's called a "poison pill".

If it was an actual poison pill, then no democrat would have voted for it. Can't really say it was poisoned when 40-odd members of the Democratic party caucus voted for it.

Oh.

So the Democrats get to keep funding for Planned Parenthood but they have to give up moving a cohort of hardened terrorists and insurgents on to the CONUS.

A little give and a little take is what you're saying.

It REALLY SUCKS how these Republicans just keep those poor Democrats bent over a barrel that way!

Goes to show the disgust everyone is beginning to feel for Obama's ineptness.

Lol !!

It passed 91-3. Oh those eebil right wingers !

The people who are "cleared for release".....release them!!!!!!!!!!!! The US looks like a horrible country while this remains open.

It has nothing to do with ideology, ANYONE should want to release those "cleared for release".

Tell Glenn that, or does your " ideology " prevent you from chastising your own kind ?

Common sense legislation. Doesn't happen often. Enjoy it.

Why? It is the least evil solution. The problem is that we don't explain it to people and instead babble about it being horrible. Why talk such harmful rot?

Funny that you'd lecture another poster to learn how things work in Washington. Even this Canadian knows that a "poison pill" is put in place to DEFEAT legislation or a takeover bid in the business world, not to gain overwhelming support.

What cowards we are. We won't give them trials and we refuse to even really take custody of them.

What do you mean by custody? As for trails, you know that that cannot work, when capture is made under the conditions most were.

If the prisoners are "cleared for release", we have to release them. Are you seriously saying we should let them rot in prison when they are "cleared for release"?

Then how long are they supposed to live like this? Eventually even many Nazis and SS criminals were released from prison.

I will tell everyone that. Prisoners who are cleared for release, need to be released. Why is this so hard for the Senate to grasp?
