The city just passed the employment agreement with the police union. It passed 10 for 1 against.
They are paying new officers the highest entry level salary in the Bay Area.
So much for the lie that San Francisco has defunded the police.
That's certainly a concern, but a part of the problem is police unions not wanting accountability for abuse either. Do you think a job with the kind of responsibility this one does, should be left unchecked with its employees having close to zero accountability if the union had its say? Raising the salaries at least makes it a better value proposition for those interested, because a job with the many risks this one has makes it a harder sell with increased scrutiny and danger to oneself. Here in Los Angeles, the big shots are begging retired officers to return.
The LAPD needs about 1,000 more officers.
But since the defund the cops movement, it is not easy to get qualified officers.
Some do not want to be falsely accused of abuse.
Los Angeles -- like all American cities -- is fast a-changing, for the worse.
It needs more cops to deal with the outrageous amount of violent crime.
There always will be issues between the "brass" and politicians. Beat cops who can make a difference in the lives of the people they serve are the happiest with their jobs. They have to pay the most because it cost the most to live there. But money isn't the big issue. Cops want to be productive & effective, without city prosecutors and officials 100% behind them they're going to end up doing a substandard job of which they will be blamed for.
We are? There always will be issues between the "brass" and politicians. Beat cops who can make a difference in the lives of the people they serve are the happiest with their jobs.
Did you know cops are discouraged from watching/consuming news?
Yes, discouraged doesn't mean bannedWe are?
The only rule I know of is no news programs on the radio, TV, or internet inside the station.
Nope, sorry, never heard of it.Yes, discouraged doesn't mean bannedThe purpose of the discouragement is that cops won't internalize all the negative job performance reviews the media conducts--especially with how often they get it wrong.
Maybe it's a newer thing? It's part of the criminal justice curriculum today. I think it was in my first term. I can check back when I have more time. I recall it because I was surprised by that, but when I read more about why, it made sense to meNope, sorry, never heard of it.
Seems like an obvious example of 'discouraging'.We are?

No, it's an anti-distraction thing.Seems like an obvious example of 'discouraging'.
Specifically to news?No, it's an anti-distraction thing.
Music at low volume is allowed. That's it.Specifically to news?
I have no problem with police anywhere.. I had 2 cousins who were cops. (both retired now)... But the blue wall of silence has to stop... Good cops protecting bad cops is a big problem...
If you have access to a recruitment officer or someone working with the academy, ask them about this. I'm wondering if it's a new thing, considering the expansion of news/media in the last decade. Very curious! I think it was in the chapter under maintaining your mental health in a high-stress job.Music at low volume is allowed. That's it.
Whatever the purpose, they are discouraging watching news. I didn't read it as no TV's, no radio's, no internet. Because you said, "The only rule I know of is no news programs on the radio, TV, or internet inside the station."No, it's an anti-distraction thing.
A few years ago LA’s police union drew the line on behavior they would not defend - necrophilia. The cop caught fondling the breasts of a dead suspect would not be defended. Made us all feel much safer.
Yep, I have cops in the family as well. There should be an open discussion on accountability instead of it being a binary option which some seem to think it is. To your point, the problem is making headway within the officers themselves, because the blue wall of silence only serves to allow for bad behavior to go unaccounted.I have no problem with police anywhere.. I had 2 cousins who were cops. (both retired now)... But the blue wall of silence has to stop... Good cops protecting bad cops is a big problem...
That's going to make AOC shit her jeans. She just blew her stack over NYC upping the pay for the NYPD.The city just passed the employment agreement with the police union. It passed 10 for 1 against.
