Same-sex... divorces!

Same-sex marriages... OK, time goes by, we live with it and we will.

But what’s about divorces? Do gays and lesbians who get married today often think about the way they can be divorced? I wonder how big the percentage of same-sex divorces will be...

Imagine gay divorce. What do you feel? As for me, it’s laughable.
 
Courts deal with gay-breakups now the same as divorce, whether or not married. It is merely a property and assets division question, unless children involved, and then there is the custody issue. There is on different between a hetero and a gay breakup - married or unmarried - in MOST regards, other than statutory provisions will apply to hetero couples and not gay couples in states where SSM is not legal.

Why do you think a divorce for a married gay couple would be any different than for a hetero couple?
 
I feel the same about gay divorces as I do about straight divorces, none of my business unless I am the one getting divorced.

Obviously the heterosexuals getting married every day don't seem to be thinking about the fact that 50% of them will end up divorced.
 
Um... what's funny about it exactly? I see no reason to feel any different about them than I do opposite-sex divorces.

If we are going for marriage equality then the obvious consequence is a percentage that will divorce. No real reason to exclude groups on this notion as "traditional" marriage has anywhere from a 25% or better failure rate (some sources put this as high as 40%, some even more when factoring in 2nd and 3rd marriages.)

So, again if we are going for marriage equality then that means government involvement in their marriage just as much as tradition marriage. Everything from obtaining the license to the potential for a judge to decide certain things when dealing with the messiest of divorces.

What do we FEEL about it? Why would we feel anything at all, besides just a general impression that it's a sad thing when people can't keep a relationship together. Whether you're straight or gay, divorce shouldn't be taken lightly, imo. Someone is at stake, and it's often the kids.
 


The same way I feel about any divorce that's not mine or someone close to me, absolutely nothing.
 



Men married to men and women married to women don't get along together any better than men married to women.

Any time more than one person is involved in something there's always a chance of a disagreement. :roll:

It's actually probably less than that. Gay couples are, on average, older and more affluent, and so aren't likely to be in hasty, young marriages. Plus, financial troubles are the number one cause of divorce, which will be less of a problem for more affluent gay couples. Plus, no gay marriages because of accidental pregnancies.

Either way, there will ultimately be no difference between a hetero or homosexual divorce.

I wasn't in favor of them making an abomination of marriage in the first place. If they experience misery and heartbreak, it's their fault.

No. If they want equality then they get all that comes with marriage, including its dismal track record.
 
I don't understand the point of the question. The fact you cannot conceive of gay couples as being no different is on you. That is not their problem.

I mean just imagine, they have the same disagreements as you. Reminds me of "zach and miri make a porno" when he's staring in amazement - "they fight just like *real* people"
 

I am taking a wild guess it's because the OP does consider them different from everyone else. She clearly does not "live with" the reality of SSM and imagines gay couples are wild beasts who screw as much as possible and thus would never want to break up. Heck, they probably only marry in the first place to rub their 'deviant lifestyle' in her face
 

Probably about the same , and very often for the same reason as any other divorce.
 


Just wait until the court takes the biological children of a gay marriage away from the biological parent in divorce, and watch the **** hit the fan.

Yes, and the children often forgotten. It is true some marriages are SO bad and/or one of the parents SO abusive that a divorce can benefit the children. But usually not. Usually the children are a secondary consideration, for which rationalizations are made up to justify the divorce in relation to them.
 
There are very serious legal issues related to gay marriage divorce. It wasn't so long ago that many gay Americans wanting to get married came to Ontario, Canada to wed and then traveled back home to live as a legally married couple. When the marriage ended, they tried to get divorced in their home State, but since the marriage wasn't recognized by the State, they couldn't get a legal divorce in that State. So off they trotted back up to Ontario, Canada. But, funny thing, Canadian law didn't allow for the dissolution of a marriage between two non-Canadians. So they couldn't get a divorce here. Canada, nice people that we are, passed laws to allow for such marriages to be dissolved in our courts so it turned out well.

But this brings up the issue of gays marrying in one State where it is legal and then moving to another State where it is currently not recognized and then wanting to end the marriage.

This is another example of why I always say that the government should not be in the marriage business, period.

Once they've stolen marriage, why should I be.

I don't think there will be too many differences.
