Republicans, Eyeing Majority, Float Changes to Social Security and Medicare

WASHINGTON — Congressional Republicans, eyeing a midterm election victory that could hand them control of the House and the Senate, have embraced plans to reduce federal spending on Social Security and Medicare, including cutting benefits for some retirees and raising the retirement age for both safety net programs.

Prominent Republicans are billing the moves as necessary to rein in government spending, which grew under both Republican and Democratic presidents in recent decades and then spiked as the Trump and Biden administrations unleashed trillions of dollars in economic relief during the pandemic.

===============
As we have learned from Roe v Wade, when Republicans set their sights on doing something, believe them.

This is a familiar repetitive pattern, when Republicans are in control, they plan to slash taxes on the wealthy and pay for it by cutting Social Security and Medicare. It is what they said they were going to do in 2018, if they won. But they didn't win.

The lesson learned is voters shouldn't ever give them the opportunity.

As predictable as the leaves changing, the democrat distortion machine is doing what it does.

Has SS EVER been cut? Ever? Regardless of who is in charge.

This is pure scare tactics and right out the the democrat party playbook. Nothing new under the sun.

I don't belive the Republicans want to kill both programs.. This, like immigration is just talking points they use to throw red meat to their base.. They scream socialism, let's kill SS and Medicare, and much of their base agrees..

Even though their base will be cutting their own throats... But stupid is as stupid does..

But the Republican politicians know if they kill SS and Medicare it will tank the economy, and they will be blamed..

GOP threats to cut Social Security have been a constant since 1935.

I’m sure that you will be bombsrdred with video of current GOP candidates talking about doing just that.

Which is what they are doing.

All the right wingers here are busy saying that it isn’t going to happen. At least not to them.

Never mind what the people they vote for actually say.

I'm inclined to agree, and cuts to those programs would be felt in the demographic that leans more in favor of the GOP.

Well, maybe. If they can convince the rubes that their sacrifice is helping them "stick it to the libs," they might just blame the Dems.

From 2017 to 2019 the Republicans had total control of the Fed government... They did nothing to fix the immigration problem..

But they still 110% blame the Democrats.. And they get away with it..

This is no different.. They'll scream Socialism.. Use it as a wedge.. But they won't dare touch it..

They'll just keep blaming the Dems...

overturning Roe v Wade was just a talking point, until they got their SCOTUS in place. Moscow Mitch was working that for years. Stopping D nominees with filibusters & the infamous refusing to give Garland so much as a hearing with 11 months left on Obama's term. Talking point are the R agenda.

True.. But if they tank the economy, their rubes might not care.. But the independents will, the Corps and health care industry will certainly care.. Big Pharma, insurance, etc..

Lots of their big money donors would be pissed..

Republicans know this... Like I said, this is just like the immigration issue.. They don't want it fixed, they don't want it changed.. They'll just keep using it as a wedge.. And they're idiot base will keep falling for their lies..

Roe vs Wade didn't affect the economy at all.. It didn't affect the Republicans donors profits..

SS and Medicare and immigration does.. Big difference.. That's why when the Republicans have the government and the USSC, nothing changes with immigration and SS..

I'm sure the GOP will promise to carve the Boomers out and make sure the pain falls on subsequent generations. And the Boomers will be satisfied with one final kick of the can down the road, everyone else be damned.

LOL Cutting social programs that help the less fortunate so they can "pay for" more tax cuts to the wealthy is the only real policy that the GOP has had for decades. So you are right it is "nothing new".

There are real concerns about the Soc Sec program. There had BETTER be people looking into the program and discussing solutions...or the program will fail.

Facts though make for lousy rat campaign scare tactics.

This. SO much this.

As a Boomer, I ought to be offended.

But you’re almost certainly right.. These right wingers trying to pretend that GOP politicians aren’t openly talking about cutting Social Security all function under the belief that it won’t happen to THEM.. Only to those undeserving “other people”. That’s a core belief in trump nation.

What we're doing now is unsustainable.

Democrats, as usual, have no plan.

Throw grandma off the cliff!

They call SS/Medicare the third rail in American politics for a reason. If the GOP wants to piss on that rail, I say let them.

Independents and moderates swing elections.

SS and Medicare don't need to be cut, they just need to be funded. Sadly Democrats are afraid to do what is necessary to fund and reform these programs to save them for the next generation.

1. Raise the cap on taxable income over $120k.
2. Means testing.

Democrats are so afraid of this they will let Republicans raise the retirement age on working class people, because what we really have is two parties that only care about the rich.

I'm a boomer, so I too should be offended.. But I'm not.. You're right..

Weird thing in the 60s and 70s the boomers did so much to change things for the better.. Now many of them are assholes.. They birched and moaned about the me, me, ME attitude of the 80s..

Now that's all many care about is, ME...

Actually, The solution is the same one Ronald Reagan applied.

There have been many studies that come to this same conclusion.

Raise the cap on income taxed for SS, or eliminate it altogether.

Raise the retirement age slightly.

That will bring the trust fund back into balance for another generation.

Again, it’s a simple solution sitting there waiting for a political leader with enough courage to push it forward.

Something you won’t see when people elect losers like Oz, Greene, and Walker.

None of them know or care how to lead. Feed red meat to the Fox cameras. That’s all they’re good for.

Yep.. SS can be easily fixed.. But the Republicans don't want to fix it.. They want to use it as a wedge, a talking point so they can keep throwing red meat to their base..

I anxiously await all of the federal social programs that have been cut. It will be a short list.

BTW a reduction in the rate of increase is NOT a "cut".

Please proceed, Republicans.

IOW "raise taxes".
Raise the retirement age slightly.
IOW "reduce benefits".

You want to raise taxes and reduce benefits. Got it!
That will bring the trust fund back into balance for another generation.
Not spending the surplus, while there still is one, will help as well. The spending of those surpluses over the years has hastened the coming financial crisis of social security.

What are the democrats, who control all branches of government, waiting for????
