A Florida Republican congresswoman is blaming fearmongering on the left for the reluctance of hospital staff to give her the drugs she needed to end an ectopic pregnancy that threatened her life.

Kat Cammack went to the emergency room in May 2024 where it was estimated she was five weeks into an ectopic pregnancy, there was no heartbeat and her life was at risk. Doctors determined she needed a shot of methotrexate to help expel her pregnancy but since Florida’s six week abortion ban had just taken effect medical staff were worried about losing their licenses or going to jail if they did.

Cammack looked up the state law on her phone to show staff and even attempted to contact the governor’s office. Hours later, doctors eventually agreed to give her the medication.

So, a woman with a life-threatening condition had her treatment delayed for hours due to concerns over the law. This woman managed to get treated, because she's a member of the ruling class and has the ability to get ahold of the governor. How many other women in Florida will not have this privilege?

My personal favorite:

“There will be some comments like, ‘Well, thank God we have abortion services,’ even though what I went through wasn’t an abortion,” she told the outlet.

I. Hate. Republicans.

.

sounds like she was pregnant when she went in and not pregnant when she came out

.

Seems we need to investigate to see if she broke the law. Of course if she had been a Democrat then she would have had to travel to a free state and would have been charged with murder upon her return.

Ruptured ectopic pregnancies are part of gods plan.

She should be severely punished along with all the doctors that gave her the drugs.

Absolutely if the Republicans believed even ten percent of their own bullshit.

Glad she’s ok. One might hope this would lead to an epiphany of sorts, but her childish comments suggest otherwise.

She should have received the same level of care she’s trying to force on everyone else.

You would think the doctors would know how the law works by now. You don't even need to go to medical school to know that 5 < 6.

Republican men all over the country, including in that state, feel like it's their right to be able to control women and some doctors and medical staff are not going to risk going to prison forever on some technicality.

So they will be extra safe and protect themselves so they can be there for their own families.

Good job MAGA

That already happens in el salvador:

What you should be asking is if she pulled up the relevant law that said it could be administered, why was the hospital vacillating?

Is it true ignorance of the law, or is it grandstanding to make some political point? (Since it got air time)

What do you think the consequences are for having harsh and insane laws, inserting government directly into medical care for theocratic reasons?

Do you think shit happens in a vacuum?

As pointed out in the article, ectopic pregnancy is not defined in the law which was very new as well.

So when you have the threat of jail hanging over healthcare providers heads by ill defined laws for stupid, bucktooth, hillybilly, made up, religious reasons, you get bad results.

Perhaps think about that for a minute before you lecture healthcare professionals on what they should or shouldn't be doing.

Or you could do the alternative, right and good thing.

Leave women the **** ALONE.

Party of personal responsibility, refusing to understand the consequences of their own actions.

This coupled with Trump today demanding oil prices not rise is so indicative of how the modern GOP is just a bunch of sabotaging, destructive, tantrum-throwing children.

I think laws are laws, written to be interpreted the same way by all, and failing that getting the interpretation by all made by the Supreme court. If a hospital wants to play games with their own incorrect interpretation, they ought to be sued.

I don't think I'd like to see shit happen in a vacuum.

But the entire timing was under the abortion window entirely, correct?

See above and revise.

No one is left alone in a country that doesn't espouse complete personal responsibility.

So much for no kings....

Follows the same logic as him demanding that Walmart eat his tariffs lol. These people think actions don't have consequences, and if they do have consequences, others should bear the burden.

He probably wasn't asking that question because the answer is extremely obvious to anyone who has been paying attention to this issue. You've probably had it explained to you before on this forum, but apparently you need a refresher.

Generally, when a wrong choice has severe legal consequences, it is unwise to trust any random person's interpretation of legal language. Including your own, as you are not a lawyer. The only person you should trust is a lawyer who you are paying to represent you. Now, you are overseeing a medical emergency and you need to get that particular lawyer on the phone or in the room. You have to explain the potentially complicated medical details which they are not qualified to fully understand. This includes the uncertainty in the data (I'll get back to that), risk estimates, possible different outcomes, etc.

Now, that lawyer has to give you his best assessment! Except, as it turns out, the legal profession has even less certainty than medicine! It's a profession that often depends on how PEOPLE interpret language. Judges, prosecutors, juries, legislators, could very easily disagree with your lawyer's best assessment. And remember, none of those people are properly trained to understand the important medical details on which you base your decision.

Your entire life depends on this choice, better hope you make the right one!

But the entire timing was under the abortion window entirely, correct?
See, here's the thing about medicine: almost NOTHING is completely certain! That date of conception is an estimate. It has error bars. In practice, it can easily be off by a week. There isn't even certainty when they're assessing the health of a pregnancy,. They are estimating risks. Sometimes they are wrong. There are countless ways that laymen with agendas can question those estimates.

Now, a reasonable person would say "well doctors have to use the best data they have, which says 5 weeks." But not everyone is a reasonable person. In fact, there are a whole lot of extremely unreasonable anti-abortion zealots in positions of power. You're from Texas, you should know this. Have you ever seen your nutjob AG Ken Paxton talk about abortion? It only takes one zealot in a position of power to question a Dr's decision and decide to make their life a living hell in court. Of course doctors are going to be cautious in that situation.

It happened last year

But we live in the present, not the past. Try to keep up.
Which can make ectopic pregnancies more problematic than they have to be.

And more life-altering, and more heart-breaking, than they have to be.

Misogynism, thy name is Republicanism.

Clearly they are if they don't know 5 < 6.
