What is the difference between a religion and an ideology? How can we reliably tell the difference?

Is calling one's own beliefs a religion or an ideology a reliable indicator on what those beliefs actually qualify as?

Are both entitled to the same rights, privileges and respect if at all? What are each entitled to?

Religion is a subset of ideology; while all religions are ideologies not all ideologies are religions. I would say that a religion requires a belief in a superhuman force often refered to as god(s) or creator(s) while an idieology may be a strong opinion yet not based on any god or creator. Believing that X is good/bad (an ideology) differs from believing that X is a gift/curse from god (a religion).

What's the point of this thread?

This isn't wikipedia Mr.

Take islam for example

Islam that only works inside a mosque as a form of individual worship IS a religion,

but the minute you bring the Kuran outside the mosque and use it

  1. to gain political power
  2. and implement a controlling system for the society
, then it becomes an ideology

This is why the minions of ISIS are not religious fanatics but ideologue fanatics! And there is a big difference, because every muslim is mandated to believe in Allah and have a strict observance of the pillars of Islam they are not required to adhere to this political project!
You might have thought that all the Syrian refugees flocking into Europe took the wrong direction, but absolutely not they are just fleeing the armpits of the world that those fanatics thugs have turned their country into!!

Yep.

Maybe it is just my background in taxonomy where categories of plants and animals are broken down from most general to most specific by grouping into families, genera, species, subspecies, varieties and whatnot, but it is impossible to argue that religion ISN'T an ideology. One might as well argue that a beagle isn't a dog because it is a beagle, instead.

Can the United States ban people subscribing to a particular ideology from entering the United States?

Suppose someone were to believe in Nazi ideology -- can the US ban them from entry?
Likewise, suppose someone were to believe in Islamist ideology -- can the US ban them from entry?

If so, then how would such bans be implemented or enforced?

If it's not possible to reliably tell who holds particular beliefs - whether religious or ideological, then how can someone with Nazi or Islamist ideology be detected and barred from entry into the USA?

The following is a question asked on the DS-156 Visa form.

Do you seek to enter the United States to engage in export control violations, subversive or terrorist activities, or any other unlawful purpose? Are you a
member or representative of a terrorist organization as currently designated by the U.S. Secretary of State? Have you ever participated in persecutions directed by the Nazi government of Germany; or have you ever participated in genocide? Have you ever participated in, ordered, or engaged in genocide, torture, or extrajudicial killings?

Of course, if the answer is yes who the hell would be honest in answering? Consular sections do run the applicant through various databases. But it is hard to screen someone out who has YET to commit a crime.

So in other words, lone wolves are the ideal micro-trojan horse or virus to get in under the radar, infiltrating the US without any reasonable possibility of detection.

The answer to that may be to simply limit immigration across the board, and to only allow people in by exception - ie. their intention to do something positive for the United States.

Despite the press coverage when it happens, the threat posed to Americans by terrorist attacks is INCREDIBLY small. However, destroying our tourist industry by making it even more difficult for international visitors to come here will do real world economic damage to many, many Americans across the country.

Likewise, arguably the number of Americans killed in the bombing of abortion clinics is incredibly small in the greater scheme of things. The number of people killed in hate crimes in the US is incredibly small in proportion to auto accidents, disease, etc.

The morality and ethics of allowing people to die in terrorist attacks because of complacency and lethargy in confronting foreign terrorist groups matters. Nations which allow their people to die at the hands of terrorists don't have credibility - they are seen as big helpless pushovers. When Iran took US embassy personnel hostage in 1979, it was on the news every night, day after day, month after month. I'm sure that during that same time span, many more people than them died in auto accidents, or from cancer, or from street crime. But the US sure looked helpless and impotent during that period.
