Redefining Race in America

Ok but is that being extreme or is that just being a shill? Using abortion as an example (and no, I don't want to turn this into an abortion debate). Certain posistions and beliefs are considered extreme regardless of how nicely someone presents those positions.

Nah, I wouldn't say a shill. That denotes some sort of deception or something a bit more organized.

I think the distinction is between position and person... with totality to be a consideration. There are extreme positions that are not presented in extreme ways. I can think of a few people here who hold extreme positions, but who I would not consider extremists. Also, there are people who have extreme positions on one issue, but not on others. The extremists tend to be the dogmatic, I hate anything that disagrees with my position folks.

For anyone you could definitely find at least one person willing to label them extreme. And I think a lot of people try to get the extreme label to stick to anyone from the side they don't like, whether they are extreme or not.

On some issues I might even refer to myself is being extremist. For example, I am extremely anti-Pedophile (I know, pretty much everybody is, which is why I use it as an example. It's something nearly everyone could identify with). I don't care why someone is that way or how pathetic a life they'd had, I see them as the lowest of the low and I won't even consider opposing viewpoints

Outside of those hacks though, I think there is a sense of the extreme that non-hacks would mostly agree on about various people.

I do agree with this, and maybe just being able (or inable) to identify extremists on your own side says something about you.

you clearly know very little about how race has played out in this country ... have whites historically been likened to monkeys, said to be inferior, lower in the evolutionary chain? Is calling a man a slut the same thing as calling a woman a slut? but you know what, keep it up ... given the demographic changes we're observing in this country, that kind of thing can only help the Dems mobilize their base ...

Yes, calling a man a slut is the same thing as calling a woman a slut... a calling a white president a chimp is the same thing as calling a black president a chimp. BTW, I voted for the black chimp; I never voted for the white one. Nice job trying to partisan pigeonhole me because I *gasp!* disagree with you on one issue.

And don't you dare presume what I do and do not know about how race has played out in this country. I marched for civil rights in the late 60's. Did you? I saw film on the evening news of white grownups screaming at terrified black children just trying to go to school. Did you? I saw newspaper photos and tv film of black victims who had been lynched that very day. Did you? I've not only seen how race has played out in this country, I was part and parcel of trying to stop segregation, stop discrimination, pressure congress and the administration to pass civil rights legislation... and I've seen over the decades that black faces are now common in boardrooms, the halls of congress, every facet of American life, including the damned White House.

Don't you dare treat me with condescension or lecture me. Don't you dare!!

oh please ... I don't care how many marches you marched in if you think that calling a white man and black man a chimp, or a "boy" for that matter, is the same thing -- apparently you didn't understand completely why you were marching ... I find your insistence that they're the same thing not only ahistorical, but insulting as well ... and suggesting that we've entered some kind of a post-racial period in this country is equally absurd ... so save the outrage ...
