This whole story is one of the more bonkers things I've ever read.
Don't forget about the bears.
I'm not sure. I don't think we are morally obligated to obey the state. Do you agree or disagree?
We would need a 25% or higher sales tax to make anywhere near that number. Of course the very wealthy would make out like bandits. This is just a ploy to boost DeSantis popularity so he can get the legislature to change our Constitution and allow him to govern indefinitely. This is a pretty bold step.
Florida collected $760 billion in property taxes in 2023.
That's a big number to make up.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Backs Proposal To Eliminate Property Taxes in Florida
The state's Legislature is considering a move to eliminate property taxes, a radical step that has the backing of Gov. Ron DeSantis.www.realtor.com
I like to know my plumber and electrician are qualified.Do you really believe I want the government to use my tax dollars to pay for occupational licenses? They are a particularly insidious kind of government regulation.
Very interesting and very bold. This is a pretty bold step.

We're not morally obligated to "obey the state," but we are, to an extent, ethically obligated to do so.
Making the decision to disobey the state ("morally" or otherwise) requires, as a fundamental consideration, an acceptance of the possible consequences of that action.
So you don't need roads, schools, police or fire protection? Do you live in a cave somewhere?lol, if I told you how much I pay inproperty taxes, rent to the government, you'd eat those words. But I'm not going to because it's so high it's embarrassing.
How I usually put it is "This is how you get bears, LANA!", with the last bit only making sense if you watched the crude cartoon Archer!.
I like to know my plumber and electrician are qualified.
Oh really? Well I don't think you can have one without the other.
Like what? You think society will collapse if we all don't do what we're told? The opposite is more likely.
If you say so.Well the jokes on you because the license doesn't mean shit. I'm in the construction business and just because you are licensed doesn't mean you know what you're doing.
Morals are personal. Ethics are societal.
Give me some examples of things which are morally wrong, but ethically good.
I wouldn't bother discussing anything with a sovereign citizen any more than I'd engage with a drooling flat-earther.Yeah but you didn't answer the question. Gee I wonder why.
Yes, the sales tax would increase for all in the state. But if you read the link, you'd see one the advantages to this idea is that it would make it easier for first time homebuyers to afford a home. Their monthly mortgage payment would not include property taxes, which would help a lot in keeping that mortgage payment down. This is becoming pretty standard. The red states are ditching property taxes and income taxes in favor of sales tax which, of course, is the most regressive tax available to them since it hits those at the bottom of the economic scale as a greater percentage of their income. Always screw those at the bottom while reducing taxes on the uber-wealthy is their constant credo.

I forgot the most important item. That's the problem.
They don't have a plan to fund them.
If you aren't morally obligated to obey the state then why follow any laws?
Did it say what average home value that average tax bill was based on?The average annual property tax bill in Florida is $2,386 from what I can find online. That's not bad.
No. Just an overall average for the state.Did it say what average home value that average tax bill was based on?
They will not.Hmmmm...Florida already charges no state tax.....sounds to me like desperate DeSantis is sucking up to the orange clown once again.....How the hell is this state, who's losing insurers by the droves, going to stay afloat???
Oh, that's right! NO ONE in the corrupt republican party cares, as long as these greedy politicians like washed up DeSantis get their recognition...
Because breaking the law has consequences.
