U.S. Sen. Rand Paul plans to undergo hernia surgery at a private hospital in Canada because of injuries he suffered when a neighbor tackled him while he was doing yard work at his Kentucky home. The Republican lawmaker is scheduled to cross the border for outpatient surgery scheduled sometime during the week of Jan. 21 at a hospital in Thornhill, Ontario, his attorneys said in a recent filing in Paul's lawsuit against Rene Boucher, who attacked Paul while the senator was doing yard work. Paul is scheduled for surgery at Shouldice Hospital. An adviser to Paul said that the hospital is world-renowned for the procedure, known as "non-mesh hernia repair," and is a private entity that is not part of the Canadian system. In choosing Shouldice, Paul will receive care in a country that offers its citizens a publicly funded, universal health care system that runs counter to Paul's approach to American health care policy.
Rand Paul to have surgery in Canada due to injuries sustained during assault
Canada? Senator Paul loves Russia so much, why not schedule the hernia surgery during his next jaunt to Moscow? You're not setting a good example komrade.

Goes to a private facility not connected with socialized medicine
Maybe if DP had a crayon font you wouldn’t have made the mistake
The amount of stupidity in the OP....
1-Where the **** do you get the notion that Rand Paul is a big supporter of Moscow, and
2-Yes...Rand Paul is traveling to a PRIVATE institution, one that due to their status as a PRIVATE facility manages to provide the best services in the world...to those that can afford to pay for it.
You arent doing what you THINK you are doing. You are instead indicting socialized medicine as two systems...one for the haves...and one for the have-nots.

Look - I despise Rand Paul and think he is the personification of a right wing libertarian slime ball. But if he wants to go to Canada to get surgery, its his right to do so and i should not be any big deal.

If your last name is Paul, you are a hypocrite. It runs in the blood.
In Paul's case, he chose the former over the latter. You can have great healthcare and universal healthcare.

You sure about that? A U.S. insurer reimbursing a client for elective surgery outside the U.S.? Maybe you’re right, I’m just curious.... and then get reimbursed by his insurance later.

As someone who's had a hernia operation it shouldn't be considered elective and out of country is considered out of network.
I don't know where you are getting your information. Any resident of Ontario is FULLY covered with OHIP which eligibility requires you to only be a resident of Ontario. This is universal health care for the people of Ontario. People in Canada that do not live in Ontario will get reimbursed depending on on their provinces applicable schedule of medical fees. Either way if a patient that lives in Canada but not in Ontario their provincial healthcare plan will significantly subsidize the cost. This hospital maybe privately run but the cost is still covered by provincial health plans (being free to residents of Ontario). This is socialized medicine all way around...
This isn't the "gotcha" some people might think it is. Paul will have to pay for his procedure out of pocket and then get reimbursed by his insurance later.
