From your OP, there is no policy position presented by Trump that abortion should be illegal - he did, foolishly, say that he favoured a ban, with the States deciding - but when asked how that would look in practice, he said people would have to go to "illegal places" - that says to me that Trump was suggesting that if abortion was illegal, as Matthews asked, then women who wanted an abortion, you know, "people", would have to find illegal places as an option. When he had a follow up, he said in effect and plainly, that if a woman breaks the law, some punishment would be necessary. Break the law, you are punished if found guilty.

Perhaps even subtlety of the Trump variety goes right over your head as you look for ways to troll other posters.

That's fair, although I didn't watch - can't stand the man, either man actually - so I don't know the context of that response. I don't think even the most strident of pro-life politicians is in favour of a blanket ban on abortion, so what he meant by "you have to ban it" is, like most nonsense he utters, open to interpretation and massage.

If this damages his electability, that would be terrific, but the other options aren't so great. If it boosts Kasich, that would be a miracle of biblical proportions and very welcome. All it may do, however, is make Hillary Clinton the next President.

Trump did say "you have to ban it" when speaking to Matthews. To me that means he wants it to be illegal. He probably didn't mean it because the man has no real positions except those he thinks will get him elected, but when Matthews pressed him, he said it.

How can any legitimate candidate at this juncture not be prepared for being confronted about this issue and other hot potatoes? That should scare voters to hell.

This, of course, is Trump's problem. He hasn't paid enough attention over the years to know what you and don't say, what the pretzel logic is that GOP politicians are supposed to follow to sound sane.

He just knows the axioms and slogans from which the GOP proceeds. If asked a question on the spot, he just logically works out the implications of the GOP's axioms and voices them. Only later does he find out that the GOP isn't supposed to voice the implications of their own rhetoric because then they sound grotesque.

I know this sounds like a conspiracy theory and it is but... it seems to me that Trumps history is based on liberal policies. Until he started running as a "Republican". When it all "changed".
