- The NTSB report identified a number of problems in the accident. Typical with most plane accidents, there are multiple factors. In this case, the major factor was congested airspace.... running helicopters under landing aircraft within 1000 feet of the ground is completely idiotic. This was bound to happen. They will be adjusting the air routes.
- As a pilot myself, I can tell you that 100' feet is within a margin of error of an assigned altitude. Never ideal, but that type of variance can happen for a variety of reasons, especially if you are flying with a traditional altimeter that is calibrated based upon barometric pressure at a nearby airport, which is updated hourly, but can materially change more frequently than that (see point #4 -- the problem was the air routes that allowed aircraft to fly this close in the first place)
