If only the people who have bragged about being the most Christian – Republicans – would listen to whom some consider the most holy man on the planet. In an interview with the Barcelona-based Vanguardia daily’s Vatican correspondent Henrique Cymerman, the pope blasted the world economy as “madness” in its selfish, often greed inducing practices.

The comments come after some observation by the Pontiff that some countries had a youth unemployment rate of more than 50 percent while many millions of people in Europe seeking work in vain, and children continue to go hungry:

“It’s madness. We discard a whole generation to maintain an economic system that no longer endures, a system that to survive has to make war, as the big empires have always done. But since we cannot wage the Third World War, we make regional wars. And what does that mean? That we make and sell arms. And with that the balance sheets of the idolatrous economies — the big world economies that sacrifice man at the feet of the idol of money — are obviously cleaned up.”

He then laid into what the liberals, or as I like to call them ‘the true Christians’ have been saying for years:

“But we have placed money in the centre, the god of money. We have fallen into the sin of idolatry, the idolatry of money. The economy moves by the desire to have more and paradoxically it feeds a disposable culture. By discarding children and the old, we discard the future of a people because the young will pull us strongly forward and the old will give us wisdom.”

Despite all better judgement; I like this pope.

Lots of people like Pope Francis because he's "a man of the people" and that's great. I think he's a pretty good guy myself and tend to like his outlook on most things but the way his perspective on economics is portrayed isn't one of them.

I'm happy taking spiritual advice from the pope but he's not the guy I look to for economic advice and, having visited the Vatican, he's got some balls talking about idolatry and money.

Exactly. From what I understand, it's one of the "richest" places on the planet.

He's not responsible for that, of course, and he tries to live the most modest life possible.

It doesn't exactly scream "humility".

Of course he isn't personally responsible for it, but to chastise others for greed, when the organization that you are the top dog in, has vast riches (not to mention vast power), is a bit hypocritical imo. If he's so concerned about the greed of others, then let's see him give away all the riches of the Vatican to the poor, rather than guilting the poor into giving the church money that they don't really have to give.

Jesus chastises greed. In fact, he specifically says that rich people aren't getting into Heaven.

When the pope takes up the Jesus lifestyle, he can talk about it.

While that's true the Catholic church is also incredibly charitable.

What gets me is that the church has amassed quite a bit of wealth and, generally, done good deeds with it. Now why anyone would believe that corporations can't do the same is beyond me.

Not directed at you personally lizzie, but I don't understand how the Pope can not talk about it while spreading Jesus' message. I do agree that previous Pope's have lived a very lavish lifestyle, but at least Francis isn't wearing suede shoes and a golden crown.

Re: Pope Francis Blasts Unchecked Greed That ‘Sacrifices Man At He Feet Of The Idol O

It is absolutely hypocritical for the pope to speak out against greed while his church is so full of opulence and wealth. But that doesn't make what he is saying any less true. He just needs to live up to those words as well as telling others to do so.

And that, I agree with. It's just the idea that one of the wealthiest organizations in the world takes a stance that someone should not value money that gets under my skin.

It isn't the pope specifically. It's the idea and the obvious conflict in what one says, and how one lives. Ya wanna be a good example of a Christlike man? Give up everything you own, pick up your symbolic cross, and get to walking and spreading the message. Jesus would probably be horrified if he saw the religion that has been set up in his name today.

Oh. He is a likable guy.
I am not sure how he would want to run societies, if efficiency is to be removed from the center of economic activity. It does not sound as though he knows very much about economics. That is a pity as there are things we can do to attain his goals. But he does not sound to know what they might be.

I see a lot of the message of Jesus within this Pope. If its a good message, and he's in a position of religious authority, anything that brings followers more in line with Jesus can only be a good thing.

I am Catholic and I'm not bashing the religion at all. It just seems to me that some of the economic policy attributed to Francis (I say it this way because I don't know what his exact words were) is a bit hypocritical.

We have a religious forum for threads pertaining to religion, which are not allowed to turn into religion-bashing. In the general forums, it's pretty much allowed unless a person crosses certain lines of courtesy. When the pope (or any other high-profile figure) criticizes certain people, as it pertains to their lifestyle, or what is right or wrong, I expect him to get some criticism.

"greed" got us the motor car, electric light, ship building, the highway system, skyscrapers, textile manufacturing, Wall Street (not the movie), banking, home building and about another million things.
Greed is good.

Yeah, and he regularly makes known his disgust with the way religion focuses on money.

Greed didn't make any those things happen, except maybe Wall Street.

You think the inventors of all those things did it for the greater good? Hahaha, not a chance. You should read some about Henry Ford.

How sad that you think the accumulation of wealth is the motivator for all things.

It is for all things that you have to be "greedy" to develop. Otherwise cars would be free. There would be no taxes for roads and bridges, gas would be free.

That's a requirement for conservatives.
