Planet Like 'Star Wars' Tatooine Discovered Orbiting 2 Suns

Gorgeous! Wow.

It's a real-life Tatooine. A spectacle made popular by the "Star Wars" saga — a planet with two suns — has now been confirmed in space for the first time, astronomers revealed. Scientists using NASA's Kepler space telescope captured details of a giant planet in orbit around the pair of binary stars that make up the Kepler-16 system, which is about 200 light-years away.
"This discovery is stunning," said study co-author Alan Boss at the Carnegie Institute in Washington. "Once again, what used to be science fiction has turned into reality."

Just more & more amazing!

"Now that we know how to detect circumbinary planets, I think we are going to find a lot more rapidly," Doyle told SPACE.com.

Science fiction is becoming science reality. Kepler has done a fantastic job and found quite a bit!

You do realize that picture is simply an artist's rendering and not the real thing, right??

Yes. I can't wait until NASA releases some real video. Same goes for the video at science.com, just shows how they work (in layman's terms).

Holy ****, if there is podracing there I am getting the next flight.

ill be in Mos Eisley hanging out with chewbacca.

You guys are hysterical! I just love this stuff. No scientist, but am completely fascinated by what they're finding. As an added benefit, the pictures make lovely backgrounds!

The majority of celestial objects are not solitary stars like our Sun. Most are at least binary systems. From a practical standpoint, a planet located within such a system would tend to experience significant environmental fluctuations. Planet longevity would be determined by orbital considerations.

But is there any way to tell if there are Jawas on it?
