If DeSantis ends up getting the nomination, I think he'll still be the one who will appoint the new senator - in early Jan, just as DeSantis has indicated. I think the likelihood of Lara Trump is greater than Gaetz.

I don't think it means any of his views have changed and certainly isn't because of being "scared". But I think it's a step he feels he needed to take to help avoid time consuming surprises he doesn't want to have to contend with.

I think you're trying to add something more to a decision made for very clear and obvious (and simple/straightforward) reasons.

The FBI looks at primarily financial issues of nominees because that issue may determine if they may be bought or blackmailed, etc. Lord knows if they did in-depth investigations of persons they would disqualify 99% of them. Why investigate their characters when we know politicians have no character?
