I just moved from CA to VA.

In Loudoun County, VA, there's a $4.20 PPT on automobiles for every $100 worth of value (using a fair market assessment).

This means I'm required to pay roughly $300 TWICE A YEAR for my 2004 Honda Accord, not to mention registration fees and a stupid decal fee of $25 (also twice a year). My wife's 2008 Nissan brings a tax of roughly $400 TWICE A YEAR.

Given that I'm a college student on a limited income, this pisses me off. I couldn't imagine personal taxes would be so much higher in VA versus CA (where I only worried about a $120 annual registration fee).

Your thoughts?

I hadn't heard about this. Yet another reason why the other side of the Potomac is more awesome.

What does buy American have anything to do with anything? You still have to pay taxes on your personal property, regardless of where the car was manufactured (or who owns the company that manufactured it).

There's only a few places I would choose to live in Maryland. Overall, I kind of despise your state.

....I don't pay any tax above and beyond the TTL written into the original purchase of the car. I then pay $69 a year for registration (including "convenience fees") and about $45 a year for the inspection. I didn't know some states charged a yearly tax on vehicles. Yikes.

Not just a yearly...a SEMIANNUAL (twice a year) tax which is outrageously high!

Take a hike on the Appalachian Trail and shake it off. The trail from Keys Gap to Snickers Gap is pretty nice, about 14 miles.

You can't just shake it off. Instead, I have to plan to move.

This county, despite being (or perhaps because being) the richest county in the whole country, exhibits the most unimaginative living spaces that I have ever witnessed. It is the epitome of a prosaic suburb.

It's definitely not for me.

buy american.

Why buy American cars? There's a reason I purchased specifically a Honda. I'm 24 years old and this is my third car. Can you guess the make of my first two?

Ford Pinto?

Not much improvement in quality over the past few decades. American car companies (and it's debatable whether or not they're even American-owned) are just recently starting to wise up.

To answer the question:

2004 Chevy Cavalier

2002 Saturn Wagon

Yeah personally i don't care much for all the "buy American" bullcrap. I'll buy American if its a better bang for my buck, which is some of the time. FWIW I drive a Honda Civic.

2002 Saturn Wagon

For my first car, I drove a 1993 Saturn SL-2 for the longest time. I loved it, actually. Saturn was one of GM's better brands, albeit more of a niche brand. A pity they and Pontiac had to go.

I've had (in order):

1985 Ford Crown Victoria (primer-covered, no paint)
1991 Mercury Cougar (breaks failed the first day I drove it and I totaled it)
1989 Toyota Tercel (had 150k on it when I got it. I put 50k on it before I sold it to some kid who wrecked it a week later)
1994 Chevy Lumina (bucket of problems; the money pit of all cars)
2006 Ford Focus (was rear-ended not 6 months after I bought it; it ended up totaled)
2008 Ford Focus (still have it; I've put almost 70k on it in 4 years and it's never had a single major mechanical problem. I just recently had to replace the battery for the first time and all other parts replacements were done per scheduled maintenance suggestions)

But look at all your taxes combined. What does the total tax burden look versus your CA amounts? Are you buying or renting in Loudon?

I live in a neighboring county, where we also have a personal property tax on our vehicles, sounds about the same as yours. But, here is why I'll never complain about it: We relocated to NOVA from New Jersey. In NJ, our property taxes had gone from about $7,000/year in 1985, when we first bought a house there, to about $32,000/year when we sold it in 2007.

So add'em up. How does the total package stack up against CA?
