"I like Congresswoman Bachmann. I've campaigned for her, I respect her. But her record of accomplishment in Congress is non-existent," he told NBC's "Meet the Press." "We're not looking for folks who just have speech capabilities. We're looking for people who can lead a large enterprise in a public setting. ... I've done that, she hasn't."

Yeah, I wondered when the candidates would start slinging mud at each other rather than the President. Of course, Pawlenty is barely on the track, he's so far behind the front runners.

Republicans eat their own. This will be fun.

Yup. Both sides of the exact same coin. Politics as usual.

Given Governor Pawlenty's desperate situation, his negative turn is not surprising. Congresswoman Bachmann has a small lead in Iowa while Governor Romney is second. The Ames staw poll is becoming more and more pivotal to Pawlenty's prospects. A decisive defeat there will probably make it even less possible for his campaign to attract financing, something that is already a major problem for the campaign. He sees Rep. Bachmann as the easier target for negative attacks given her less prominent experience. A frontal attack on Governor Romney would probably be a losing proposition for his campaign, especially if Romney used some of his formidable financial resources to counter it.

At the same time, there is ample latitude for Rep. Bachmann to hit back (something that she will probably try to avoid unless her support begins to erode). First, Governor Pawlenty's economic "plan" relies on unrealistic assumptions (e.g., sustained 5% real GDP growth) and, if those assumptions are not realized, could significantly exacerbate the nation's fiscal imbalances. Second, Governor Pawlenty's fiscal credibility was undermined in the recent downgrade of Minnesota's credit rating. Fitch Ratings made explicit mention that the state had resorted to gimmicks (one-time funding flows, deferral of expenses, and use of stimulus proceeds) to create the illusion of a balanced budget during Governor Pawlenty's tenure. Those two issues undermine Governor Pawlenty's implicit claim that he has the ability to "lead a large enterprise in a public setting."

IMO, his dismal performance during the NH debate all but doomed his prospects. I don't believe Governor Pawlenty will be a legitmate contender for the nomination. The attacks are merely the wimper of a dying campaign.

I said it in the thread:

...sooner or later someone within the GOP field will have to start slicing into one of their opponents. It's the only way any GOP candidate will be able to separate himself from his (or her) opponents.

Seems GOP hopefuls have finally begun to realize they can't keep attacking the President and hope to move themselves further up the ladder as the GOP primary nominee. At some point they'll have to start cutting each other's throats. Seems Pawlenty is trying to draw first blood.

This could get interesting...:popcorn2:
