On a planet 4C hotter, all we can prepare for is extinction
There's no 'adaptation' to such steep warming. We must stop pandering to special interests, and try a new, post-Kyoto strategy

Oliver Tickell The Guardian, Monday August 11 2008

We need to get prepared for four degrees of global warming, Bob Watson told the Guardian last week. At first sight this looks like wise counsel from the climate science adviser to Defra. But the idea that we could adapt to a 4C rise is absurd and dangerous. Global warming on this scale would be a catastrophe that would mean, in the immortal words that Chief Seattle probably never spoke, "the end of living and the beginning of survival" for humankind. Or perhaps the beginning of our extinction.

Another example of how the GOP uses blantant fearmongering to push its agenda.

That eco-whack-job probably idolizes Al Gore. He probably has a poster of him on the wall behind his bed and whole bunch of plastic Gore figurines and a signed copy of Al Gore's lame fiction comedy The Inconvenient Truth.

Actually it's true that if the planet warms by 4C we are doomed, however it is not clear when that will happen: in 10 years or 100 years. It is also clear that humans are impacting a natural process, but the degree to which we are is not fully certain. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that we should investigate our own environmental contribution, in case it actually is a big factor in what is going on. Thousands of scientists worldwide agree that humans need to curb greenhouse gas emissions. I trust them over any individual politician any day.

Hyperbole asside, any of those of you here tossing this out the window care to demonstrate or explain as to why this is crap?
Which of the arguments presented of the article is non-sense?

Yeah, I watched some show on PBS about it.
I think it was called "7 degrees" or something. Anybody see anything like that?
They had a bunch of scientists on there talking about what would happen if the temperature went up one degree, two degrees, three degrees, etc... all the way up to seven degrees.
Before watching that, I was just like... oh well, seven degrees, big whoop. I'll just crank up the air conditioner.
I'm always too cold anyway, you know; I'll probably like global warming.

But actually, according to these scientists, even if the temperature rises just two or three more degrees, the ice caps will melt, coastland will become ocean, farmland will become desert, everything else will become disease-infested swamps, the weather will go crazy as a spotted-ass ape, and the permafrost in siberia will melt, exposing a bunch of bogland which will release a bunch of methane into the air, making it unbreathable and killing us all, if- that is- we don't die first of contagions spread by insects, which will become ubiquitous in the new warmer and more humid climate.
Plus most of the world will die of global famine, because we won't be able to grow food anymore.

That's if the temperature goes up like two degrees.

So, you know... I'm sure it's all just theoretical, but it does sound like something to keep an eye on.

I forget the exact number, but there is a theorized "critical level" of CO2 gas that would end things, but our current rate of emissions won't reach that level for a hundred years or more. However, with the slight increase in temperature now, the arctic permafrost is already melting. It contains millions of tonnes of CO2. If the permafrost melts, we are doomed.

Futile. They won't because that that would require understanding the subject.

You know they won't do that.

Yeah, I saw that. I believe it was National Geographic Channel.

Anyway, I hope this doesn't happen for a little while. I sure could use a vacation, but I need to get prepared first.

It's kind of ironic. Thousands of years ago, humans were faced with a massive climate change. And when it happened, we moved. Followed the food sources, etc. But today, thanks to our progress, we've grown fat and unable to adapt to a large change.

Maybe some of us will survive. Wouldn't it be funny if, like the Joe Rogan joke, maybe a thousand years in the future or so, our descendants, completely removed from technology, came across New York City and, unable to explain it, determined it must have been aliens? You know, like how some have theorized about the pyramids?

The only problem with the premise of the article is that the planet has been COOLING for the past 6+ years. CO2 continues to rise, yet global temperature is dropping. Yep, sounds like a strong correlation between temperature and CO2 to me.

Why this crap belongs in the onion.

I like reading the insane ramblings of these conspiracy theorists who go home at night and vigorously masturbate to The Day After Tomorrow. When the "new Ice Age" hits, everyone here will be long gone. So will their grandkids. So will their grandkids' grandkids' grandkids.

Still pushing false claims, eh? No matter how much it's been debunked, you're still pushing it. What's the point of debating you with facts.

Define 'doomed'.

Will the earth end? No.
Will life be snuffed from the surface? No.
Will the human race die out? No.

Will the fat, happy life that many are accustomed to come to a screeching halt? Yes.

It’s not the end of the world, its just the end of the world the GW crowd wants/likes to live in.

I've decided that the GW people are indeed sincere in their belief that the doom they predict is indeed going to happen, and that the primary motivation is that they fear having to live in a comfortless world - and by ‘comfortless’ I mean one without grocery stores and coffee shops - as they know they cannot survive.

They also know that, in that world, their ideology will die out - after all, only affluent people with significant free time will bother to listen to their incessant whining about things that aren't fair.

So, the GW crowd does what it does, not for some altruistic goal of 'saving the planet', but to save their own way of life, and to save their ideology.

Debunked by who??? Certainly not by you. Here's some FACTS for you and they are in a nice picture so maybe you'll understand them.

UAH and Hadley are two of the four temperature data sources. UAH is satellite based and Hadley is surface station based. Both show a decrease in global temperatures. RSS, another satellite data source, agrees with these two. GISS is the only data source that does not indicate cooling and it is biased by Hansen.

I don't think most of us could survive the Great Depression at this point.

Wow, same old debunked crap over and over again huh? Notice how
  1. it doesn't address the OP
  2. it's a blatant lie.

Tracking temperature by satellite is the most inaccurate way of doing so, did you not know? Now let's see the real data, Gill.

When averaged though, their imprecisions do cancel out.

Why do you push forward the notion the planet is warming then? Or do you just go by the climate change label now?

You're the only person that I've heard say that. What is your reasoning and proof???

OR.... did you pull it out of your a**, like you usually do?

The article claims the planet will get 4C hotter, I showed that it is actually cooling. How does that NOT address the OP???

it's a blatant lie.

OK, I"ll bite, where's the lie. Or will you continue your usual MO and make a crazy claim with no backup, proof, or explanation.

Pretty weak.
