Yeap we are having tornadic action here tonight in Dallas. Civil defense sirens sirens going off and all. This usually happens in the spring time not what is supposed to be winter time.

Hope you have a safe night. Take care down there.

We have earthquake building codes in California.

I am surprised there are not tornado codes in the tornado alley.

Like the 3 little pigs, you need a brick house, not wood or straw.

To survive an EF-5 tornado, the building code would require that all houses be built underground out of 18" steel reinforced concrete with a blast door for the entrance and no windows. Which is basically how a "safe-room" that is built into a house is constructed (less thickness in the concrete, but still). There's no way that people could afford to build a house if the building code took into effect an EF-5. However, the building code does take into effect an EF-2/3 with roof design, tie rods from base plate to foundation, and strapping from walls to floor and from walls to roof. There are other requirements as well, but nothing can keep a house from being destroyed by an EF-3, EF-4 or EF-5 tornado.

The view from the air after a strong tornado is empty slabs, bricks fly just fine. Many have storm cellars, we got one two years ago, it is called peace of mind.

A friend of mine from South Dakota had an old brick silo on her farm.
Tornado blew through and the silo disappeared.
Not one brick could be found.

It does and can happen any time of the year.

Be safe Winston. The south got whacked from Texas to Mississippi, we lucked out on the really bad stuff here, but El Nino is definitely leading to some unseasonably warm and muggy weather here.

Back in the 1960's these used to be called fallout shelters.

The USSR is now gone and the Russians are tamer, but the tornados still reek havoc along tornado alley.

We had some wierd tornadic activity in central texas too! None touched down where i lived though we saw some funnel clouds start spinning then die down before they could do anything. We had a few hit ground but they were far east of me.

This is nothing new for this year, earlier this year texas had record floods and tornadoes, we had tornado sirens going off in belton temple salado etc. It is an el nino year, which is caused by warming waters affecting the jet streams, which effects weather worldwide. It is something that had been recorded during the time of the aztecs, and is a weather anomoly that ocurs on average once a decade, sometimes sooner or later.

Last major el nino I remember i was in california, where we had massive floods, and multiple tornados in the high desert in the mountains. The high desert gets tornados, but they usually got maybe one every 3 or 4 years that was too small to hurt anything, while during el nino they had probably around a dozen in one day, in an area outside tornado alley not known for them. El nino can turn a winter wonderland into a swampy heatwave a southern swamp into tornado central and the dry planes into blizzard central.
