Ocasio-Cortez Now Says She Wants to "Tax Robots"

You ruined a thoughtful comment with nonsense...

The problem is the idea of automation is to FREE we humans from work. That's not happening, and is a big part of what drives populism on the right and left. We all see the labor market getting less and less stable, many people working more than one job, and still barely making it, and part of it is labor productivity gains aren't going to workers but to owners and designers - the highest skilled. They're doing great, but when you bring a factory to the U.S.that needs 1/10th the people of just 10 year ago, where does that leave blue collar workers? Service jobs taking care of our parents and grandparents paying $12/hour for back breaking work a lot of times?

Look out 30 years with AI booming, and robotics, and self driving cars and trucks, and automated warehouses, automated kitchens and ordering - where do currently blue-collar workers see a future with good wages?
And her solution is to pay people who are not productive contributors. She believes we are at a time in history where we should work less.

If she were arguing that we need to work on different problems than the ones robotics are taking over that would make sense.

She is suggesting mankind should be playing in recess and receiving a paycheck for it. She is also suggesting we tax machines to pay for it. How exactly fo you determine how much to tax a machine?

He was born half way between 3rd and home plate. If you want to give him credit for the last couple of steps, fine. But daddy is who "made" him a $billionaire.

You Leftists should propose a federal law to prohibit success. Everyone should be "equal" like they are in Cuba, right?

When I point out that Hanoi John Kerry married his first extraordinarily wealthy wife, and then divorced her to marry an even MORE extraordinarily wealthy one, Leftists giggle and tell me "Yeah, he's smart."

So it's "smart" to be exceedingly wealthy if you married into it, and you are a Leftist. But earn hundreds of millions and it's a ho-hummer, IF you are a Republican.

Democrats are anti-common sense, anti-science, anti-liberty, and anti-American.

Democrats think men can become women, women can become men, full term babies may be murdered at the mother's sole option without any regard for the father's rights or the baby's rights. They think greedy rich white people, particularly Americans, control the climate, and they think and claim and pretend to be smarter than everybody else.
You see, there is little correlation between intelligence and wisdom. I give you the Unabomber, a far left-wing *environmentalist* who murdered people with package bombs and lived in a rathole shack in Wyoming after teaching mathematics at UC Berkeley.

She is new and she is young. She will make mistakes. I think she speaks from her heart. No matter, I like the hell out of her.

Exactly what Trump does, speak without thinking. I think it is rather telling that you said she will make mistakes, like you don't think she has made any yet.

Yep, she really said just that.
How proud Democrats must be of this former bartender turned know-it-all socialist.View attachment 67252356

Typical American success story.

At the right place at the right time and all of a sudden they are labeled as a genius. I have seen this throughout my life in business too.

Of course you made that up and put stupid words in my mouth because you'd rather not address the post on its own merits.

When I point out that Hanoi John Kerry married his first extraordinarily wealthy wife, and then divorced her to marry an even MORE extraordinarily wealthy one, Leftists giggle and tell me "Yeah, he's smart."

The worst argument ever is a hypothetical that condemns me in this case for what you imagine I would say. John Kerry did like John McCain, and married into great wealth. If I ever claim that they or anyone else were "self made" $billionaires by being born into their wealth or marrying into it, call me out. Until I do, how about you address what I did say instead of what your fevered imagination comes up with?

So it's "smart" to be exceedingly wealthy if you married into it, and you are a Leftist. But earn hundreds of millions and it's a ho-hummer, IF you are a Republican.

I will never understand why people post like this.

She was referring to an idea Bill Gates has floated before. You all know Bill Gates right? He's that college drop out who didn't know anything except enough to revolutionize the computer industry. In the broader context of the subject, figuring out how people transition to other work when its replaced by automation is a worth while discussion.

Discussion yes. But, to think that we might get to the point where half the people in the country actually work for a paycheck while anyone who doesn't want to work at all can just sit around getting a check for doing nothing goes against the grain way too much for me. This is one reason Trump got elected, for daring to say that we are going to bring jobs back to the US. The socialist left, like AOC, would rather just let automation take over, tax the robots, and send a check to people for not working. Is this what we aspire to as human beings? Then, the left wants to have free college education and yet there will be few jobs left for those graduating.

How do you know he is a billionaire? Once the House is able to obtain his tax return we will know. I suspect he is much less than a billionaire, much less.

Trump is not self made wealthy. He started with millions from his father and screwed people out of million upon millions. Those are facts well documented. Trump also partnered with felons and mafia, US and foreign. That is also documented.

Trump was bankrupt 4 times and headed toward 5 when he was suddenly flush with Russian money and loans from Deutsche Bank when no other western bank would loan him money because of his poor business management and insolvency.

Money does not make one a better human being. There are many wealthy people, successful in business who are miserable failures at being human.

How does one determine how much wealth a person has by reading their tax return? Not just Trump, but anyone. Seriously, how?

It was a direct quote from her according to your article

She said, ""We should be working the least amount we've ever worked," explained Ocasio-Cortez. "If we were actually paid based on how much wealth we were producing."

That's not equivalent to: "It sounds as if she believes mankind has reached its pinnacle and we have no problems left to solve."

No one can listen to her speak and believe she thinks we've solved all our problems. The opposite is true - we have huge problems left to solve.

There will be no "let" automation take over. It will happen when it can happen, and nothing we can do will stop it.

FWIW, it's clear you don't understand her comment at all because what would a tax on robots do? It makes them less cost effective, which will delay implementation, so you cannot possibly read her comment and conclude her plan is to let robots take over by taxing them. The proposal is intended to and would slow adoption. The alternative, what conservatives would favor presumably, is to not tax them thus speeding their adoption.

Automation and robotics are not systems that just originated this year. They have been incorporated into businesses across the country for decades.

The number of employed continues to grow under President Trump. Now I know this makes you very, very angry, but please try to stick to facts, not bitter speculations.

Part of my job is automating workers out of existence and I’m very good at it. But Americans have low adoption rates when it comes to new technologies particularly those which replace people. So if you want a glimpse of the future you’ll need to go overseas. You can check out the BMW plant near Munich to see what the future of manufacturing will be. Or read up on a few studies regarding the use of robotics and AI in the workplace. Probably the first set to watch out for will be AI systems to replace call center workers.

Who is labeled a genius? If you're talking about Bill Gates, OK, and I might agree his genius was more seeing the potential and buying someone else's core idea, but he did build a successful company....

As to AOC, I'm pretty sure no one labels her a genius.

LOL, it would be a welcome change to have any kind of intelligence in a call center.

You mean like the Pavlov dogs that have been after Trump for more than two years?

That does not even make sense. Do you even read what you write before you post it? Apparently not.

I'm really curious to see how the impact of automation plays out as it continues to increase; especially when it starts impacting white collar work at a faster rate. I don't think people are just going to be sitting around waiting for paychecks, but it could very well be that our roles shift more to the ones machines cannot replace (i.e. soft skills). We have to start thinking outside of the old paradigm of what jobs used to mean and really plan for what they will be in the future. Saying that we want more manufacturing jobs or coal mining jobs is fine in the short term, but I feel you're doing those folks a disservice if they're not going to be prepared for what happens when those jobs disappear.

What concerns me is how we bridge the gap from a training/education level to get folks from manual ones to more technical ones. The cost of education in this country puts that out of reach for many, and that's not going to help us in the long run. I think there's too much made of this idea people just want to sit around and collect checks, because most people would rather have purpose and be productive at some level.

I suppose that's true enough, but I'm not sure what point to draw from it. Sure, members of Congress are in my limited experience often dumb as rocks, but they ran for office, did the work necessary to get a nomination, etc. and got elected. Gates did in fact lead a company from nothing to one of the most valuable on planet earth. So in both cases there was some skill and lots of very hard work, obviously there's no comparison to winning a bright blue seat in NYC to building Microsoft, but she did run and win, which I haven't done.

And I don't believe in hero worship of the wealthy. Just because Gates was good at running Microsoft and appears very, very bright doesn't mean he's correct about taxing robots. But it's also illegitimate to dismiss the idea because it was Gates' idea, and he's just lucky. What no one has done that I've seen on this thread is actually address the idea on the merits or, much more difficult, lay out a vision for how the bottom half in aptitude are going to thrive in 30 years after AI and robotics are adopted in virtually all we do.

There are yin and yangs to the economy. Look at all the jobs lost when Henry Ford created the assembly line. Oh, wait a minute, now we have millions of more jobs making cars than we had in Henry Ford's times. For every job destroyed by automation, a different job opens up. The socialist left try to find excuse after excuse after excuse to find ways to pay people for not working.

I like her more and more every single day! I seriously can't get enough of her quotes and such (honestly her voice grates a bit on me, so I like the quotes and posts better).

Let her speak out! - snip -

Well if you can't get enough of her speaking out, I have this entertainment for you:

New York’s freshman congressman, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has, like, a lot to say, lol.

Over the course of a wide-ranging 80-minute interview at South by Southwest on Saturday, the 29-year-old left-wing lightning rod let loose a litany of “likes,” “you knows,” and “whatevers.”

In between calling America “garbage,” capitalism “irredeemable,” and President Reagan racist, AOC said “like” no fewer than 71 times, “You know” at least 34 times, and “whatever” five times.

She also said “ummm” too many times for us to count. The popular progressive personality also has a penchant for peppering her prose with, “I think” and “I guess.”

Speaking of her strategy of not trying to convince critics “of anything,” AOC advised: “Stop trying to win people over, stop trying to enter a conversation thinking that you’re going to, like, ‘aha’ them into changing their minds. And so, I think, that, you know, we’ve kind of lost the art of conversation. So when I enter a conversation with someone I actually try to learn more about where they’re coming from, like I try — I actually use it as an experience to — like, let’s say, I’m talking to someone who’s saying something really racist and they don’t even realize that they’re saying something really racist, I — I asked some questions because I’m interested, I’m fascinated by that. How does that work, you know?”

Fascinating, sure, but she was hardly finished: “But you have to — we have to learn to, like, really disarm ourselves in these conversations first of all, because we approach them with so much hostility and, like, they get mad and we get mad and all of these things and — and we have — so, part of it is, like, emotional work. And — and the second part of it is intention, like, what are you trying to get out of this conversation?”

This, we regret to inform you, is but a small sampling. There was so, so much more. Which is why we compiled everything into one short supercut featured above.

Please, like, enjoy, or whatever.

Take the time to watch the compiled video, it's like, umm, you know, like hilarious.
