MCCAIN RELEASES LETTER TO OBAMA For Immediate Release Monday, Feb 06, 2006 Washington D.C. *– Today, Senator McCain sent the following letter to Senator Obama regarding ongoing Congressional efforts towards bipartisan lobbying reform. The following is the text from that letter:

February 6, 2006

The Honorable Barack Obama

United States Senate

SH-713

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Obama:

I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere. When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable. Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble. Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again.

As you know, the Majority Leader has asked Chairman Collins to hold hearings and mark up a bill for floor consideration in early March. I fully support such timely action and I am confident that, together with Senator Lieberman, the Committee on Governmental Affairs will report out a meaningful, bipartisan bill.

You commented in your letter about my “interest in creating a task force to further study” this issue, as if to suggest I support delaying the consideration of much-needed reforms rather than allowing the committees of jurisdiction to hold hearings on the matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. The timely findings of a bipartisan working group could be very helpful to the committee in formulating legislation that will be reported to the full Senate. Since you are new to the Senate, you may not be aware of the fact that I have always supported fully the regular committee and legislative process in the Senate, and routinely urge Committee Chairmen to hold hearings on important issues. In fact, I urged Senator Collins to schedule a hearing upon the Senate’s return in January.

Furthermore, I have consistently maintained that any lobbying reform proposal be bipartisan. The bill Senators Joe Lieberman and Bill Nelson and I have introduced is evidence of that commitment as is my insistence that members of both parties be included in meetings to develop the legislation that will ultimately be considered on the Senate floor. As I explained in a recent letter to Senator Reid, and have publicly said many times, the American people do not see this as just a Republican problem or just a Democratic problem. They see it as yet another run-of-the-mill Washington scandal, and they expect it will generate just another round of partisan gamesmanship and posturing. Senator Lieberman and I, and many other members of this body, hope to exceed the public’s low expectations. We view this as an opportunity to bring transparency and accountability to the Congress, and, most importantly, to show the public that both parties will work together to address our failings.

As I noted, I initially believed you shared that goal. But I understand how important the opportunity to lead your party’s effort to exploit this issue must seem to a freshman Senator, and I hold no hard feelings over your earlier disingenuousness. Again, I have been around long enough to appreciate that in politics the public interest isn’t always a priority for every one of us. Good luck to you, Senator.

Sincerely,

John McCain
United States Senate

So is Obama showing his true Democrat colors?

I thought this letter was hilarious and from what news is available now, well deserved. Of course, the level of vitriol is a bit over the top, but what are you gonna do?

Wow. This makes me see John McCain in a different light. When the republicans did their little whisper campaign against McCain, saying that he was an angry person as a result of his captivity, I was disgusted. But maybe there is a little truth to this. I see an angry, vindictive person. He publicized this letter? For what purpose? To show what a tough guy he is? I think he showed what an a$$ he is. "Hey, look at me. I am reprimanding Obama because he is a backstabbing democrat."

Nice. Real nice, Senator McCain.

Allow me to translate for the forum...

"I liked McCain because he was hated by the right wing Republicans, but because he is still more to the right than the person I like better, I will now switch my position."

I shoulda seen this post comin'...

it appears to me this was necessary.. as more lip service is the nature of the tune in Washington.

And thirdly, even if McCain released this letter, so what? It speaks to the very crux of our problems in Washington... party lines are more important than the good of the American people, in most if not ALL cases.
You need to mention this to some of the members here...:2wave:

I just find it disappointing when someone like McCain points this out in a letter...and then gets attacked by the Left!...

We've already seen it on this very thread...:(

Left or right, redd, it doesn't matter. In recent years, there have been alot of attacks against both sides, by the other, in mere attempts to smear those that don't think like they do.

Believe me, I'm having enough trouble watching the PA legislature act like asses. Washington just makes me go

Ummmm, WRONG, cnredd. How you deduced such a conclusion from my post is beyond me. But hey, if it makes you feel better about yourself or makes you feel like you're some great post analyzer, keep it up. LOL

You always seem to think you can catch me contradicting myself, yet when I point out that you were unsuccessful, you seem to go away. Awww, it's okay to admit when you're wrong, isn't it?

Just two questions....how do we know this letter is genuine, and why is Stinger's original post edited by RightatNYU? ( At the very bottom of the post it says last edited by...)

Hi Hoot. It does appear to be a genuine story.

McCain: Obama is insincere

I love Obama's response to McCain's letter. As usual, he exudes class.

"I confess that I have no idea" what prompted the letter, Obama wrote Monday. "But let me assure you that I am not interested in typical partisan rhetoric or posturing. The fact that you have now questioned my sincerity and my desire to put aside politics for the public interest is regrettable but does not in any way diminish my deep respect for you nor my willingness to find a bipartisan solution to this problem."

Ahhh, there's my Obama. McCain looks like an a$$ in this situation. Airing your dispute with Obama was a low blow. Grow up, Senator McCain.

McCain needs to get a grip. His infamous anger is once again getting the better of his brain. Do you think he sends a letter like that to everyone who listens and then disagrees with his ideas? He must be running out of stationary if that's the case....

Obama has a great big bulls eye on him. He is a major future threat to the Reps. I'm sure this is only the beginning of the attempts to discredit him. Fortunately, he is a class act, so it won't be an easy task. He certainly won't stoop to McCain's level. :rofl

Without knowing the full and complete story, it seems that Obama backed out on a deal with McCain, McCain then hired Joey Greco to help film Obama cheating on him. During the confrontation, McCain wrote this letter and then slapped Barak across the face. Well deserved it would seem.

Renegging on a gentleman's agreement is really poor form. Good for McCain on calling him on it.

So you went to the link which is the official website of the US Senate and still think the letter maybe a phoney. Or perhaps all the news shows reporting this morning are in on it?

Hey Hoot:

Here's the link to McCain's website where he posted the letter

And here's Obama's site where he posted his first letter, McCain's letter, and his latest response:

February 6, 2006

The Honorable John McCain
United States Senate
241 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear John:

During my short time in the U.S. Senate, one of the aspects about this institution that I have come to value most is the collegiality and the willingness to put aside partisan differences to work on issues that help the American people. It was in this spirit that I approached you to work on ethics reform, and it was in this spirit that I agreed to attend your bipartisan meeting last week. I appreciated then - and still do appreciate - your willingness to reach out to me and several other Democrats.

For this reason, I am puzzled by your response to my recent letter. Last Wednesday morning, you called to invite me to your meeting that afternoon. I changed my schedule so I could attend the meeting. Afterwards, you thanked me several times for attending the meeting, and we left pledging to work together.

As you will recall, I told everyone present at the meeting that my caucus insisted that the consideration of any ethics reform proposal go through the regular committee process. You didn't indicate any opposition to this position at the time, and I wrote the letter to reiterate this point, as well as the fact that I thought S. 2180 should be the basis for a bipartisan solution.

I confess that I have no idea what has prompted your response. But let me assure you that I am not interested in typical partisan rhetoric or posturing. The fact that you have now questioned my sincerity and my desire to put aside politics for the public interest is regrettable but does not in any way diminish my deep respect for you nor my willingness to find a bipartisan solution to this problem.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
United States Senator

And the reason the post is edited by me is because this thread was originally posted in US politics. i didnt see it, and posted a duplicate one in today's news. Once it got brought to my attention, I deleted my thread and copied this one over into the Today's News forum.

In his latest letter, Obama is playing the wide eyed innocent child. I'm interested to see what comes out of this.

I was addressing past posts he has done where he has attempted to provide evidence that I was contradicting myself. Ho hum. He must give me a lot of crediblity enough to want to discredit it. So I take his responding to my posts as a compliment.

I didn't attempt to disprove what he accused my post of saying in this instance because his conclusion was so ridiculous. I honestly don't know where it came from, but oh well. I meant what I said in my post--that seeing McCain's sarcasm in his letter made me see him differently. It turned me off. It's that simple. There's far more professional ways to express disagreement without looking so obnoxious.

Okay, I gotcha.

I am not at all surprised, in fact I am vindicated in my continued belief that in politics, especially in the Democratic party, that it is 'Party 1st, Country 2nd'.

As for McCain, I think it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! He has cut the legs out from under the Republicans at times, who were trying to do what was right not just for the benefit of the party, for his OWN reasons.

Is this a real letter or is this a hoax? Forgive my ignorance but I haven't seen or heard about any of this until reading this on this forum. When I read the letter, it comes across as very "amateurish" which is why I question if it is real or a hoax. I am hopeful that it is a hoax because the content and tone of the letter seems below what a Senator would write and certainly under what I would expect from McCain. It sounds like a kid who gets upset and takes his ball away and won't play
John McCain is a Republican that I actually admire and respect, but this makes me question his character. I will have to read more because I have actually thought that I would support McCain if he runs for president (depending upon who the Democrats put up). But now I am having second thoughts.
