Oh, so there's something wrong with all those straight soldiers out there? Is that it? Nevermind all the great service they've given us over the past 234 years.
Well, in the near term, I was just thinking about gays in the military. My suggestion to extend this to co-ed situations was half-humorous, half-serious, but most certainly at some point in the distant future. I would be happy to see women serve in combat units first, with separate shower facilities.
The US has a very strange obsession with the naked body, regardless of your sexual preference. Probably rooted in our puritanical orgins. It is equated with sex instead of just being a naked body. In Germany, where I was stationed, I used to ride my bike out to the local quarry. There was a beach and water you could swim in. Germans used to go frequently and when Germans go to the beach they strip down naked. Beautiful women were a bonus, to be sure, but you got old folks and fat folks and young kids and everything - buck naked. After the initial shock, being an American and unused to such a display, it wore off and it just started seeming to be natural. Sure, I still looked at the beautiful women, as did practically every man there, but it stopped being a stare as that's rude.
This aversion to nudity can be overcome in the military. That's what leadership is all about.
This is off-topic, but could you all explain how I can best use DP? I am brand new to the forum.
1) I keep getting emails for all replies. Should I turn them off? How?
2) How to best check for new posts across all threads?
thanks!
Why would that be their right? Are they generally allowed now to refuse to bunk near someone they don't like?
I would be happy to see women in combat arms units, as long as they were all female units.
I think it would be bad policy to force soldiers to accept situations that are outside their upbringing. Telling soldiers that they have to stop being Americans and be somone else that is more PC acceptable would have a negative outcome, IMO.
Then they could break out in pillow fights in the barracks. :::schwing!:::I would be happy to see women in combat arms units, as long as they were all female units.
They are forced to repress those certain urges and really don't know what to do with their penis if a gay man were to appears in the shower with them. It is very threatening..wouldn't ya agree.
All the "openly" gay person wants to do is take a shower.
A soldier would be well within his/her rights to refuse to billet with a gay soldier. The same way that you can't force males and females to billet together.

Or, one of their fellow companies could use NVG's to look into their barracks at night...lol. (been there, done that)
No he/she wouldn't, he'd/she'd likely be in violation of 'Don't Ask'
And, a bigoted scaredy soldier, too.
Or you could just treat them with the respect they earned as soldiers. :2wave:
In most cases that'll happen, but we're talking about a bunch of kids, so some tomfoolery is to be expected.
Any inappropriate tomfoolery is easily solved at a command level. It's what NJP is for. It will take little to no time for the message to get across.
Not if they abolish DADT and gay soldiers are allowed to serve openly.
Do heterosexual couples flaunt their sexuality when on duty or on base?
And, that is what's known as, "a breakdown in discipline". Ya can't NJP everyone out of the service, because they don't buy into your idea of a PC world. An easier solution is to keep males and females seperate.
It's only a breakdown of discipline f it happens alot, which there is no indication will happen. if it is occasional, then it is like most other things NJP handles, and not a breakdown in discipline. Occasionally, unit commanders have to punish people for alcohol related issues, but that do not mean that alcohol should be banned from military people.
No, they don't. Physical contact is prohibited.
So why should the rules be any different for the gays that are already serving under DADT should DADT get revoked?
That's the foolishness of the whole DADT debate.

There is already evidence that co-ed small units are effective. Who were those women MPs that helped blast a 20-man jihadi assualt team pulling convoy security detail? They rock! And they were co-ed.
Bullcrap! (is that acceptable on this forum?) The Army has led cultural change in the past and it can do so now and in the future. Changing this culture doesn't change soldiers from being Americans, it makes them Americans. And it certainly is not Political Correctness. It's just a little nudity. No big deal. Let's get real.
