People with a history of mental illness should be having that already is the point. America isn't dealing with the reality of a crisis in mental illness. We need to stop letting them purchase guns, and provide the infrastructure once again that supports and protects these people from themselves and protects society from them.

A 2012 survey conducted by conservative pollster Frank Luntz, for pro-gun-control group Everytown USA, found that 76 percent of American gun owners, including 71 percent of NRA members, supported prohibiting people on the terror watchlist from buying guns.​

Not to worry, the NRA continues to rebuke their membership's and the rest of America's wishes and they continue to oppose any bill restricting people on the terrorist watch list to buy guns. I'm willing to bet they'll make the same cry about not being able to arm the mentally ill.

and this is a perfect example of something being popular also being very wrong.

take some time and reconcile you position with our legal tenants of due process and a presumption of innocence... or don't ...and be stuck with supporting a denial of constitutional rights without due process... your choice.

I have no problem with wider availability of mental health information, and more consistent reporting, however the standards for determining 'mental illness' annd what constitutes a danger to the public is a discussion all its own. As well as the impact it could have on people seeking help for mental illness.

Upon hearing the news that their son had committed the act he had in Aurora, Holmes' parents declared that they weren't the least bit surprised. A university expelled him he was thought sufficient a threat to them, and there were several other things that escape me at the moment that all demonstrate that we have individuals known to be a threat to us all that are not receiving the care that they should. Oh yeah, and we're still selling guns to guys like Holmes.

The amount of mass shootings we have in this country mean that if Obama were to make comments about gun control following every mass shooting he would literally not have the time to talk about anything else

No, not an evaluation of the purchaser, a scan of the purchasers criminal record, and mental health history. Obviously if he hasn't a history of mental health issues, or a criminal record (btw, there may be some exception I'm not aware of, but essentially of crimes committed with a fire arm) then sell him the gun.

Do you know ANYTHING AT ALL about the 'terror watch list' or are you just parroting rhetoric? Did you know Ted Kennedy was prevented from flying due to the terrorist watch list? Or that 2 year old infants were not only prevented from flying but were strip searched due to the watch list? Did you know that even the Obama Justice Department has filed briefs against the 'terrorist watch list' because over 1600 names a day are added, there are literally no restrictions on who can be added, and that entire categories of people are added based on even a loose connection to someone...anyone that might be related to someone associated with someone that MIGHT be worth watching? Maybe?

Not to worry. "The left" can count on plenty of willing people all to eager to repeat foolish statements that they read without knowing the first thing about.
