He strikes me as a guy who sought to "become" president, but he's never acted like he wanted to "be" president. Privately, a loss might be a relief to him.

Not from my perspective. When an occupation doesn't have any concequences for failure, it's not a real job. Teachers have to break the law to get fired. Just being a piss poor teacher can't get a teacher terminated.

The jobs I've always had involved manual labor and if I didn't put out, I didn't stay. So no, teaching isn't a real job in my opinion.
