Obama’s call to close Vatican embassy is ‘slap in the face’ to Roman Catholics

There's two billion Muslims. Do we have an embassy just for their holy city?

We would if they had one, yes. We would have one for Tibet if it still existed as well, and may some day in the future. Is this some anti-christian thing you've got going?

The outrage is genuine. It is a slap in the face.

Yes, Ireland is equally disgusting.

Moving to another country, that is...

The symbolism(which is a big part of diplomatic relations) is lost on you it would appear..

Maybe its time for some Catholics to stop thinking they are so special and important that tax payers should pay to give them special services.

Obama

Once again Obama shows his vile contempt for the Church and the faith that 25% of Americans share.

What a despicable creature...

Im sorry but this is a legitimate move. Many people around the world do not recognize the Vatican as a country, but more of a separatist part of the city of Rome.

Now i am not saying i like the idea, i agree that it is insult to the Catholic religion and to the holy father and clergy, but just the same i can under stand it.

The embassy is where ambassadors and diplomats are staffed. Might be a good idea to have the pope on board with your foreign policy when nearly 2 billion people hang on his every word. I'm not even Catholic and I see this, why can't you?

Sometimes the popes have agreed with our foreign policy and sometimes they haven't. It didn't seem to have an impact either way. Since the popes have opposed most wars in recent years, I wish they had more influence at times.

Even most Catholics don't care that much about the pope anymore. If they did, they wouldn't use contraceptives and they would oppose capital punishment and nearly all wars.

Mecca
As the birthplace of Muhammad and a site of Muhammad's first revelation of the Quran (the site in specificity being a cave 3.2 km (2 mi) from Mecca),[5][6] Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in the religion of Islam[7] and a pilgrimage to it known as the Hajj is obligatory for all able Muslims. Mecca is home to the Kaaba, by majority description Islam's holiest site, as well as being the direction of Muslim prayer. Mecca was long ruled by Muhammad's descendants, the sharifs, acting either as independent rulers or as vassals to larger polities.

Mecca is part of Saudi Arabia. Nice try though.

Most catholics don't care about the pope? Any evidence to support this?

The Vatican is not a country, we shouldn't waste money on an embassy. No longer continuing to provide special privileges is not showing vile contempt, it is setting things right. I've been to the Vatican, many cities have larger public parks.

The idea that it isn't a country when it certainly is shows your position on this matter without any further elaboration. Thank you for responding.

As it is, Vatican City is a country. Opinions mean little.

Then as I responded to Perotista before, that should be totally acceptable as well...

Each of our embassies serve 300 million American citizens. That's their charter.

The Embassy in Rome can serve those 300 million just as well as having two Embassies in the same city, Vatican is in Rome, can. Not a problem.

When is the last time we shut down an embassy really anywhere? Iran?

I haven't the faintest idea, I never worried about an Embassy before. I'm not worried about this one either especially since we have another one 10-15 minutes away. What ever the reason, it seems to make good fiscal sense for a country 17 trillion in debt.

Yeah there's only about 1.21 BILLION catholics in the world, why would our diplomatic ties with the Vatican be important?

I've had it with Obama and his subversive, little-man agenda.

Three Hail Mary's and one Our father and you'll get over it.

Go forth and sin no more.

Irrelevant. Those 1.21 billion Catholics are not citizens of Vatican city.Only little over 450 people are actually citizens of Vatican city.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vatican_and_Holy_See_passports
Of the approximately 800 residents of Vatican City, over 450 have Vatican citizenship

So what? There are still 1.21 billion Catholics and they, at the core of their religion, hang on what the Pope has to say.

I certainly consider myself a Christian more than an American, and I'm certain many others feel the same way. I'm not catholic but if my church advised me to do one thing and the president of the USA advised me to do something else, I'd probably listen to my church.

Again its irrelevant, those people are not citizens of the Vatican. Those 1.21 billion Catholics are citizens of the countries they live in.
