(NPR) Holy white smoke, we have a new pope! (1 Viewer)

He is an American missionary from South America.

I expect to see a lot of pressure on the US to address the humanitarian issues in South America as well a making immigration more humane.

Everything today, including - especially - his chosen name, points in that direction.

Here's Leo XIII's crowning achievement:

It was almost like "Hey, the president of the United States posted that fake photo of himself as Pope. Who can we pick to piss him off the most?"
Believe it or not, the leaders in the Catholic church are human. That may not be as crazy as it seems.

What's the big deal, seriously? A new Pope, get all excited? Almost like what the Who used to tell us......................

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

Mind you this is for the faithful. For hell bound atheists like myself, it's all just a bunch of................................................ smoke. 😜

Hah! Well said!

Thanks for your respectful & lighthearted response.

I'm buoyed by the respectful good-nature I'm seeing in this thread.

I don't know why I'm posting this.

But I find it disturbing that a new pope is chosen and this thread blows up. The word trump is in this thread 20 times more than Leo or Provost.

It's Trump this... Trump is the anti-Christ this will hurt Trump... maga people will hate this... Hopefully he will denounce Trump...

Trump Trump Trump Trump.

Sigh.

Anyway, I pray God blesses Leo 14 (is that right?) And the Catholic church. And also the Church universal.

He's the leader and voice of reason America needs right now. Probably a big reason for why he was chosen.

This choice is analogous to the that of the Polish Karol Wojtyła (John Paul II) during the Solidarity Movement, and subsequent fall of the U.S.S.R.

The world is a lot bigger than Trump or the US.

The guy’s been Pope for 5 minutes and everyone’s trying to figure out which team he’s on to see if they support him or not. Hilarious.

I am a realist, that means I too am a atheist. Yes, I use my critical thinking.
Still, as I was steeped in Catholic dogma for 12 years, formally, and have been surrounded with it my entire life, I am rather excited the Pope is from America.
Plus my grade school was was St Leo's.

Irrespective of the Dogmatic & Faith/Theology aspects, the Church is a unique institution that has survived for two millennia. It has been intertwined with and part of the entirety of modern Western Civilization.

For some of us, that's an attraction.

I think a different more diplomatic tact will be important. Do that and MAGA will see him being chosen as a completely political move to counter Trump and he'll lose all influence with them.

Yes. Leo will not denounce Trump directly.

But he will voice himself on relevant policies.

For the record, I don't care what team he is on.
I am an atheist. But he seems to be trending in the same direction as the last Pope who seemed to be less of a dick about social issues.

I don't know how much good it'd do but a bad hard right pope could do a lot of damage.

I originally wanted a traditional ecclesiastical Conservative. I miss the Latin Mass.

But now that I see this guy, and his embracing Leo XIII, I think he's perfect. The Conclave was thinking on a much higher level than I was.

And I do think Trump is making a big impact upon the world, more than we might realize. As might be seen by how the Conclave has spoken.

I was discussing this just the other day.

What empire has lasted this long or has spread so?

I attended a Latin mass in Jerusalem a few years ago in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher right in front of the tomb where Jesus was supposedly buried. Everything was in Latin and sung, including a men’s choir of Franciscan monks. As a non-catholic it was very interesting to see.
